“Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion; a sound perceived as pleasingly harmonious”. This is the definition given by Oxford Dictionaries, and a very accurate one at that.

While voice acting brings animation to life, music, for me, adds a whole new dimension to the anime-watching experience and makes me feel as if I had somehow managed to enter the world depicted in the anime. Music draws viewers in – soft tones that start creeping in or a sudden sforzando can catch viewers’ attention. Music sets the mood and atmosphere – it stirs positive and negative feelings; it creates tension; it gives us resolution. Music helps pace the storyline – this is said with particular reference to the rhythm and beats. Music helps viewers better understand the story – the type of music that is played during certain scenes helps put the point across. Without music, a show would be monotonous – it would be like hearing people speak without any variation to their intonation. And watching shows simply would not be as much fun.

Memory links are formed with the help of music – in the sense that music can be seen as a form of identification for the series. When any main theme filters in, one can easily make a connection and link it back to that particular show. Any distinct melody allows one to easily recognise and place where that music came from. Hence, we feel a sense of home when we hear music.

Music is essential to any show. With a good soundtrack, I believe that music is capable of elevating the status of a show. It can make an amazing series a masterpiece, a good series better, a mediocre one good. Sometimes, if the OST is simply beyond spectacular, it can even make a horrible series bearable. And to emphasise just how crucial music is, this section is devoted to entirely to music. I hope that through this, everyone will be able to better appreciate music and in turn, have an even more fulfilling anime-watching experience.
