At last we’ve come to the end of Hoozuki no Reitetsu. While the manga is still ongoing, the anime has sadly finished, though not without a bang. It was fitting to end with none other than the deceased/spirit related Bon Festival in the first story but of course, Hoozuki has to have the last say and he does spectacularly make his feelings/thoughts known in the final story to what has been a sarcastic, cynical, dry but witty anime of Winter 2014.
And we’re back to 2 unrelated stories again with previously introduced characters making a strong comeback for laughs. Satan visits to lecture about himself while his chief aide Beelzebub (Konishi Katsuyaki‘s got great comedic timing if you haven’t already witnessed it before) accompanies, along with his high-maintenance wife Lady Lilith (Honda Takako). Can Beelzebub finally go one-up against the Japanese demon who’s every being exudes the Japanese work culture (i.e. work 24/7)? Hakutaku also makes a pleasurable return in discussing how he’s the greatest sell-out on all monsters in China and how his feud with Hoozuki actually goes waaaay back to 4,000 years ago. Guess they were just meant to hate each other from the very beginning~
Maybe I’ve not noticed it before. It seems that in Hoozuki, both stories presented have a running theme between them. We saw that in previous episodes 09 and 10 and this episode is all about how outward physical appearances mean SO MUCH. Don’t kid yourself, looks and appearances do matter. Suzuki Tatsuhisa (Tattsun!) guest voices as the inch-high samurai to hilariously dramatic effect this week as we also get to see just what type of woman will capture Hoozuki’s heart! Continue reading
This week it’s all about karma. Who you were in life is measured by how much offerings you get in death. Of course, those offerings don’t go directly to you, it goes to the 10 kings who govern Hell. It seems in any bureaucracy, bribery is the way of life. Even in hell. What you put in is what you get. And that applies to dieting too – incredible how the topic jumps so far yet the theme runs so close! Hoozuki shows why he’s the demon of all demons yet again.
In a rare episode where both stories are related and told back-to-back, we witness the true perils of men – alcohol and women, as Yusa Kouji demonstrates why he’s the go-to seiyuu for perverted, ero-loving characters.
