Man Is a Wolf to Man 「人は, 人にとって狼」
Oh the lies…
I have to say I sort of lost faith in this show in much the same way that Maria’s probably losing faith in herself. Her trust in humans and her belief in peace over war just isn’t sitting well against the church and mercenaries who of course, have their own agendas in seeing this war continue. The external conflict mirrors Maria’s internal conflict and the virgin witch seems to have lost her way as to why she’s interfering at all in the first place.
All in all, this episode started out strongly. But somehow, it’s as though the staff aren’t willing to push the boundaries further and are trying to stay more neutral on things. I guess Junketsu is catered to the masses and so prefers to stay on the mainstream, non-antagonistic, non-thought-provoking side of things. Which isn’t what I signed up for unfortunately. I mean, the narrative’s done very well in stringing the theme of lying and deceit what with Galfa becoming chief, Bernard appointing Gilbert as magistrate and Martha lying about being tricked by the heretic Maria. So why didn’t little Ann have more a greater supporting voice in spelling out the obvious to these silly adults who’ve had their eyes covered?
Anyway, for me this episode’s come down to fangirling over Sakurai‘s sinister, evil Bernard who’s so evil that even one-armed mercenary Garfa had to give it to Bernard for plotting to take Maria’s chastity. Sakurai’s done evil before and has been deliciously good in Psycho Pass as Makishima Shougo. Some seiyuus have only one evil voice and call me bias but Sakurai has varying degrees of cold ice in his sinister undertones >.<
The other fangirling goes to Ono Kensho who’s role as Joseph has grown on me over the episodes. The guy’s actually got really good timing (either that or the sound director’s excellent or maybe both) as we hear his inner conflict when interacting with Maria in this episode. Last but of course not least is Hanae Natsuki‘s Gilbert. I wonder if he sees Sakurai as a senpai and gullibly goes along with him (they were in Tokyo Ghoul and Diamond no Ace together too) just as how Gilbert gullibly goes along with Bernard’s orders. Where will pure-sounding Hanae/Gilbert stand when the whole evil plot is revealed?
