Onto more serious things this episode as with St. Michael “curse” on Maria, we get to the central plot of Maria’s virginity! Ok that sounded more crude than it did in my head… but it’s what happened! Never thought I’d write something like that lol ^^ St. Michael’s an angel so technically he can’t hex or curse anyone as that’s what witches supposedly do. So god has decided that Maria can keep her magical powers as long as she stays pure and chaste; honestly how does he get to decide this I mean, does this mean that god created witches too then? Hmm…. moving on. Once Maria loses her virginity (perhaps to honest, down-to-earth chap Joseph) then poof go her powers too. Damnit, Maria realised she really ought to have lost her chastity before St. Michael put this wretched curse on her! Oops! Shouldn’t have said that out loud right Maria?! Lol. The other curse comes in the form of newbie owl aka St. Michael’s minion spy proxy Ezekiel (Hanazawa Kana). The blue-haired one is a devout, loyal and zealous to the job angel who’s primary role is to ensure Maria doesn’t use her magic when she’s watching. So no problems then when Ezekiel’s not watching right? Haha, well played Maria!
Also new this episode is the initial reason why I started watching Junketsu in the first place – Sakurai Takahiro and Hanae Natsuki show up in supporting roles as devout Christian monks Bernard and Gilbert respectively. Nice to see the Diamond no Ace senpai-kohai and once-comrades in Tokyo Ghoul seiyuus come together yet again, this time as friar and novice monks in the city that Maria lives in. Bernard offer her an olive branch (mead actually) in hopes that the witch turns away from her magical ways and lives the good christian way of god. Umm, problem is that it doesn’t stop the war does it? And ah, who’s going to help the villagers? So no thank you Bernard, you can humbly cleanse and kiss the feet of he who is pious but Maria’s got bigger things to do.
On the other hand, the sentiments of the mercenary armies are as represented by Ono Yuuki‘s Garfa who gets drunk by day because of Maria’s efforts, which thwart theirs in earning a living. So not only is the church after Maria but the mercenaries too want her to stop interfering. Does nobody want peace around here?! Garfa couldn’t have known that if he nudged Joseph onto Maria more then the holy innocent witch would actually lose her powers and not be able to interfere. Until then, the price of peace is staked by a witch’s chastity and the jokes around it uncharacteristically for anime, classy and witty.
