Karma Time 「カルマの時間」
Returnee student Akabane Karuma AND his seiyuu Okamoto Nobuhiko are just so so cool…
This week’s problem student is also the new addition to class 3-E, returnee ace student Akabane Karuma who’s the red-haired badass we saw the Ministry of Defense pin their hopes on at the end of the last episode. And boy is the student returning from his suspension term one truly badass student, being the only one ever to land not one but 2 hits on Koro sensei!! Kakkoii~
As with most badass students who are given suspensions, no prizes for guessing that Akabane-kun was utterly betrayed by his form teacher in year 2. He thought he had his teacher’s back when told that as long as Akabane-kun thinks he’s doing the right thing then sensei would look past it because Akabane’s academically smart too. So taking out the best student in the year because of presumably snide remarks made against another classmate of Akabane’s seemed to be the right thing to do right? No, sensei got into a hissy fit and banished Akabane to the End class as punishment for possibly affecting the sensei’s career. That’s one of the most sh*thead sensei I’ve ever seen in anime. But it’s not too far-fetched from the education system in Japan tbh. I’ve actually heard first-hand accounts of such cut-throat behaviour of people who are suppose to be educators and it’s sickening more than sad to be a student on such receiving end.
So Akabane’s very keen on revenge on a teacher, any teacher. Which makes him being paid to kill Koro sensei like a dream come true. So much so he was willing to die for it. I LOVE how the guy’s got such guts. To him, his second year teacher’s as good as dead, which means an absolute distrust for all teachers. So to acknowledge Koro sensei as a teacher in the end was an understatement the anime didn’t quite show through unfortunately. Akabane’s smart, scoring full marks on Koro sensei’s quiz. He’s daring enough to steal Koro sensei’s gelato (transported through space) from Italy and Koro sensei’s coin purse lol. But Koro sensei sees the smart boy not as a threat – no one ever is, the takopachi making tako sensei is keen to do his job, one that no one has ever done for the students of class 3-E, not even new PE teacher Karasuno who’s training them like they were in the army. No, Koro sensei looked out for Akabane in his amazing tentacle sticky (eww) web used to break his student’s fall. A lot of truly brilliant thinking went into the kamikaze plan and just as much thought went into Koro sensei’s rescue mission. It’s a battle of wits between them and I really want to see more of it, more of Akabane putting Koro sensei into a spot and more of Koro sensei embarrassing the hell out of cool, charismatic Akabane (tako nail art and that apron lol).
Okamoto Nobuhiko does a really really good sinister psychopath voice and it’s such a treat to hear his low whispers and lackadaisical voice inflections this episode! Think about it! We’ve not heard such sadistic tones from him since Brothers Conflict‘s Asahina Hikaru and Mahou Sensou‘s Nanase Gekkou, both of which this reviewer painfully sat through out of sheer love for the seiyuus. This season he’s gentle and quiet Sinya (Akatsuki no Yona) with way too few lines, otherwise the carefree snake familiar Mizuki (Kamisama Hajimemashite 2) or much too stoic Jonathan Mitsuhiro (Soukyuu no Fafner: Exodus). I hope Akabane turns out to be the ace with killer instincts (pun fully intended) that Nagisa-kun described him to be so he has more lines in future episodes!!! The humour courtesy of Koro sensei is spot on again this week though with Sugita voicing Karasuno, I somehow just expect the guy to give deadpan one-liner tsukomis rather than relegating Koro sensei to play in the sandbox (that Osaka castle… how?!). 3 episodes in it’s pretty clear what the formula is for Ansatsu Kyoushitsu. What I hope is a clearing of the tone of this show – is it going to be lighthearted but with underlying dark tones or turn darker but with light moments peppered in. So far it’s looking like the former but fingers crossed it’s not too slice-of-life because the assassination story is very interesting and should be played up more!
