Happy Birthday 「掉棒打星」
He said it!!!! Kyouya finally managed to (bring himself to) say it!!!! Even if we didn’t get to hear it…
Here we finally have it – the token shoujo 3 simple words episode. It’s the genre’s must-have episode where the tsundere guy admits he loves his girl. 3 simple words, ‘I-Love-You’, that escapes most shoujo male leads as it does in the romantic movie Kyouya ends up watching with Erika. Of course it’s the hardest thing Kyouya will have ever said in his life because (1) this guy’s personality is twisted, (2) he’s an absolute cynic and (3) he’s the type who can only say what he truly means (i.e. not like Kamiya). So upsetting it was for Kyouya that the cool black prince actually tried to practice in front of a mirror and even punch-broke it out of frustration (it’s shoujo so no bloody mess mind).
I don’t know who’s more stressed out being with whom. Kyouya’s got every reason to be stressed out being with a girlfriend who declares wanting something as abstract (and cheesy/corny) as LOVE for her birthday, to which the black prince answered right on cue that he doesn’t know where to BUY that hahaha! He “seeks” the advice of his friends Takeru (yay to Hosoya‘s return) and Nozomi – yup, the guys are so laid back they’re on first name basis already and yes, Nozomi is more or less Kyouya’s friend now even if stubborn Kyouya refuses to acknowledge it. But rather than advice, I think the guys were more astonished at how emotionally inept Kyouya is when it comes to all things lovey-dovey. So according to the guys, how do you know you really like someone? When all you wanna do is make that someone smile~ I wonder if guys in real life have such “love talks” amongst themselves – isn’t it a girl thing?
On the other hand, Erika’s with a guy who is SO twisted he doesn’t know what love itself is, as is expected of our sadistic black prince! So as a girlfriend who dreams of romantic liaisons and gestures, she’s really dating the wrong guy. He’s sadistic, tsundere and doesn’t express himself normally (and I say that with all the love for Kyouya’s seiyuu Sakurai as he struggles Kyouya’s lines perfectly). Was it so difficult to compliment her haircut without sounding snide? Kyouya’s losing his sadistic edge and composure as he fights the masochistic tendencies that arise from putting himself in various awkward occasions as he tries to say those 3 little words. It’s cliche but hey, it’s Sakurai (who’s giving this viewer such a contrast that’s helluva lot of fun to watch in Gugure) so I’m soaking it all in. Plus, it’s fun to watch the cool prince lose his cool right? How the tables turn ever so slightly here. Ultimately though, I as a shoujo fan, loved how this episode’s development made Kyouya realise how he actually does genuinely love Erika even though it all started as a farce/game to him to pass his boredom with. Especially loved those moments when he’d look at her while she wasn’t looking, then break out into an uncharacteristic smile~
