こひなと一つ目と信楽 – Kohina, the Cyclops and Shigaraki
This episode, Kohina developed the ability to see spirits. Not just Kokkuri-san, Inugami and Shigaraki, but all the other spirits floating around her house. Yes, Kokkuri-san’s worst fears have materialised – Kohina is now officially a spirit-seer. Or she was for the span of this episode, because thanks to Shigaraki, she doesn’t see the spirits anymore.
Before this, Shigaraki had been playing the freeloader, sleazy character that seemingly had no redeeming quality whatsoever. However, this episode proved that he did have a good side to him after all. On top of keeping the fact that Kohina was harbouring a spirit a secret from Kokkuri-san, he also babysat while she was playing with the said spirit and protected her from being devoured by it. The sweetest thing though, was when he took away her spirit-seeing abilities. While he mentioned doing so because he didn’t want to have to explain to Kohina and risk seeing her cry, he also said that spirits should be nothing more than dreams that people forget when they wake up. Thinking that seeing spirits is a reality that Kohina shouldn’t have to face, he cast a spell to cause the seen to become unseen. Awww, Shigaraki~~
While the better part of this episode was rather different from the usual silliness that is Gugure!, it showed a very caring side to Shigaraki that made me think twice about his image as the stereotypical sukebe oyaji character. Deep down, the old tanuki dude is actually a pretty good-natured guy. He really does care for Kohina, and it definitely showed. He even has the battle scar to prove it!
That said, I wouldn’t have appreciated this episode (and particularly that exorcism scene) so much if it weren’t for the seiyuus and staff who did brilliantly putting all the different aspects of the show together. Special mention has to go to Nakato Jouji for bringing said tanuki character to life. Another thing that made that whole ‘erasing’ scene all the more beautiful and touching was the music. I haven’t heard Hyakkoku Hajime’s works before Gugure!, but based purely on this series alone, I’d say he is doing a mighty fine job with this OST. Those delicate keyboard notes certainly created such a serene mood and really pulled at the heartstrings in a very awww kind of way.
I very much appreciated just how aww-inducing this episode was – a good break from all the silliness. Not that silliness is not appreciated. Quite the contrary. And in true Gugure! form, we got the usual silliness after the ED, courtesy of the formidable baka duo that is OnoD and Sakurai. In the scene after the ED, Kokkuri-san and Inugami had a discussion on the 100,005,000 reasons as to why Inugami hates Kokkuri-san. To keep it short, the greatest reason Inugami hates Kokkuri-san: because he is not Kohina-sama. That’s right, Inugami hates everyone in the world, even himself. He really does need help. Lol, well said Kokkuri-san, well said… I could not agree more.
