The Tsukushinoshima Traveling… of Hesitation 「躊躇いの筑紫の島周遊」
Aww… that was such a sweet episode~ all that blushing and awkwardness. These 2 kids are just so shy it’s so sweet to watch them move closer to each another slowly bit by bit, as much as the Dark Flame Master and the Tyrant Eye’s contract that binds them allows!
First off, I’ve been procrastinating on getting this show’s reviews out and so hereby declare that I will get them all done within… 2014 heh. It’s just that Chuunibyou’s a mood thing for me what with all the chuunibyou references. It took watching other shoujo animes for me to revisit Chuunibyou Ren and realise how cute it is as a highschool shoujo romcom anime; sometimes you just have to go away and come back to a show. It’s straightforward and uncomplicated (so far at least) without any love triangles (nope, Nibutani Summer Forest ain’t ever going to happen) whatsoever. It’s purely on Rikka and her boyfriend Yuuta.
The second year students are off for the momentous class field trip. The whole class (and probably school) knows that Rikka is dating Yuuta, even if that’s not exactly the term Rikka would use. They’re so embarrassed that everyone knows and tries to get them together in public – it’s highschool, everyone does it at first because they just have to plus they’re jealous they aren’t attached themselves, but thankfully everyone does also then realise they need to give the love-birds space and let them just be. The problem is, these 2 kids (and I say kids because Rikka’s rightfully so since she’s the Tyrant Eye stuck in chuunibyou as her choice of a coping mechanism) haven’t done much beyond handholding! Everyone’s a busybody yes but I gotta admit I was really rooting for them to finally have a little chaste kiss when Rikka sneaked into Yuuta’s room. Such doki-doki moments are cliche (the teacher might find them out *gasps*) but cute, shy Rikka voiced by a delightful Uchida Maaya, just made the scene so much more fun to watch! I can’t remember the last time I egged a romantic lead on out loud!
Yuuta deserves shoujo boyfriend of the year and I can safely say that now that we’re nearing the end of 2014 and I’ve seen at least one shoujo show each season. He’s patiently waiting for Rikka, being considerate for her chuunibyou condition and personal situation. Where else would you find such a highschool boyfriend who’s actually a healthy, virile teen holding himself back for all we know?! Being in love doesn’t sit well with Rikka’s chuunibyou world. She claims that a barrier has been in the way of their contract (of love) and that it’s the psychological effects of said barrier that prevents her from approaching Yuuta. As a former chuunibyou-sufferer, he knows all too well that Rikka’s simply embarrassed, then Yuuta goes to say that he too is just embarrassed! A guy who admits his weakness in front of the girl he truly likes! Oh man I love this show~ thank goodness Rikka didn’t leave Yuuta hanging (in spite of his patience) and turned around to give the guy a little peck on the cheek. So sweeeet!!!! This is shoujo’s doki-doki that leaves a viewer smiling at the end and I want more! Unlike other shoujo shows, Rikka’s chuunibyou really works well to serve as a conduit for her embarrassment so there’s none of those just-get-on-with-it type of rabu-comedy scenes ^^ 良かった〜
