“A man’s jealousy is a sad thing, Kyouya… you’re not the only man in the world you know.”

Trust Kyouya’s best friend Takeru to warn Kyouya of his foolish ways. I love how especially in shoujo, the supporting characters really do go a long way in supporting the main couple in getting together and more importantly, staying together. After Christmas comes the next most commercial and therefore, unromantic of events – Valentine’s Day. If you’re not familiar with how Japan’s version goes, the girls are the ones who give their crushes chocolates on 14 Feb and in return, the guys who feel the same way about a girl they received chocolates from, give the girl chocolates on White Day 14 Mar. Then there’s the obligation chocolate 義理チョコ (gi-ri-choco) which is what friends give each other when they don’t specially have anyone else they want to give chocolates to. So what’s Erika to do? Because of course Prince Sata being the way he is, hates Valentines’ (more so than Christmas?) and being the guy’s guy that he is, doesn’t like sweet food at all. To his credit though, Kyouya does notice Erika’s recipe book full of tabs and gives the event idiot the chance to make something just for him since, it’s just for him right?

Nope. A man’s jealousy is really a very sad thing Kyouya. Yes it’s true that Erika shouldn’t have given Kusakabe what’s meant only for you but you didn’t even hear her out! A lot of effort went into making those coffee-chocolate cupcakes and you just threw them onto the ground like that? Meanie! Why can’t you communicate like how a normal person does?! Why on earth does Erika still stay with you? You treat her like you would a pet but even you’ve gotta come to terms with the fact that she’s an actual human being right… Admittedly, Kusakabe (Murase Ayumu) isn’t exactly competition in my books. The guy’s got the looks all right but he’s sooo negative and so insecure he comes across more like Erika’s own puppy you just want to hug, rescue and give refuge to. Erika’s friendly, down-to-earth and genuine personality (apart from her huge lie at the beginning of course) is what attracted Kyouya to her and now, it’s what’s drawing Kusakabe to her too! I do blame Erika for being overly friendly with Kusakabe though because I wouldn’t just touch a classmate’s hair and be at such a close distance like she was when suggesting the bishounen pin up his bangs. That move must’ve led him on.

Before I continue, a quick mention of new character Kusakabe’s seiyuu Murase Ayumu. He’s most well-known for voicing lead character Hinata in Haikyuu!! but I also think he’s slowly but surely gathering fame for having one of the most trap-worthy voices around. The guy’s natural register is so high I thought Kusakabe was a girl at times! Don’t be fooled though because Murase does a 180 in M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane as Isaku Heito, so much so you wouldn’t believe it’s the same guy. I’m placing him as the Toyonaga Toshiyuki equivalent amongst the current batch of newbies. Also worth mentioning is Erika’s seiyuu Itou Kanae because I thought her angry, exasperated outburst in the fast food restaurant was particularly well done! Maybe it’s the script but she really nuanced that anger into the words very well ^^

Now that we’re halfway through, I’ve come to realise that we’ve seen Erika cry in every single episode thus far, in one way or another, because of Kyouya. The Prince tells his best friend that if he does indeed lose his girl, he’ll just have lost one way of killing time which, we all know isn’t true but the boy’s just too damn tsun and/or proud to admit it. But when Kusakabe confronts his love rival that the meek boy’s confessed, Kyouya’s first thought goes towards the collapsing snowman he made as a child. So it’s obvious the Prince has issues that are deeply embedded, resulting in that sadistic, warped personality. As much as you enjoy watching Erika react to every little thing you do Kyouya, you better start treasuring Erika before she really gets swayed by Kusakabe’s honest confession! It’s not a good feeling to not be contacted at all right? Serves you right. Prepare for battle Prince Sata! Or you’ll forever more lose your masochistic pet pocchi!
