Excalibur – エクスキャリバー
Frejya/Thor gets his hammer back and easily defeats Thrym (with the help of the gang of course) and Jotunheim is saved.
Continuing from where we left off in 16, the battle with Thrym begins and the gang got him down to two HP bars from the original three but with his heavy attacks, they might not be able to last till they defeat him. Were you guys so weak? There’s even Yui helping them as a battle assistant, isn’t that almost cheating? Being able to find out and predict a new boss’s attacks are the most important and difficult things to achieve in such games and they’ve already got Yui helping that with that.
At Freyja’s advice, they found Thor’s hammer (please read my episode 16 review for a detailed explanation on the references to Norse Mythology) which was heavy as hell for Kirito but light as a feather for Freyja. I initially thought that she might be related to Thor in some ways, but no. She IS Thor. The beauty transformed into a grizzly giant, much to the gang’s surprise and Klein’s dismay. With the help of the Aesir, Thrym was defeated. Seems like it was a right choice to free him from that icy cage because he rewarded them with a replica of his weapon. Even after Thrym is defeated, the amulet they got from Urd continued to turn black. The gang hurried towards the bottom of the dungeon to remove Excalibur from where it was firmly struck into the ground. After much grunting, Kirito managed to remove Excalibur, which led to the destruction of Thrymheim and the restoration of beautiful Jotunheim. Everyone received the quest rewards and Kirito, Excalibur. We ended the episode with a nice IRL get-together (with Agil standing at the back and not joining in for some reason, even though his bar had been closed for the day) with Yui “joining in”. I just thought that it was rather interesting, while humans try to dive into a virtual world, Kirito actually simulated the real world for a virtual AI.
Let’s just say that I wasn’t the least bit impressed with this mini-arc. I thought that there should have been more to it during various times. When they battled Thrym, he was almost like a sitting duck who kept being attacked by them. Sure he spit out some mean attacks, but that was it. After getting cut by the whole gang, one of his HP bars just burst. The search for Thor’s hammer was the same too, it was too easy. Once Thor’s hammer fell into his hands, things went even faster. two HP bars of Thrym’s were diminished and before we knew it, Thor had smashed Thrym’s face into the ground. What did Thrym mean by his last words? Be careful of the Asgard gods? I’m not going to read too much into things at this juncture, because I have a feeling that SAO II might just disappoint me in the end.
And what happened to Asuna? We’ve been seeing more Leafa/Sugu and Sinon/Shino than every, was the love between Kirito and Asuna my imagination? I’m really afraid of watching the next episode/arc now, please don’t disappoint me anymore.
