Life and Death 「死闘」
Lots of resolutions this episode, all which lead to my own resolve in finally deciding that I do not like Sengoku Basara: Judge End.
Before I start ranting, let’s take a quick second to remember that this instalment to the Sengoku franchise is still essentially about Date Masamune vs Sanada Yukimura. Then the story introduced another layer of rivals in Ieyasu vs Ishida, leading to Date + Ieyasu vs Sanada + Ishida. But last episode saw the literal revival of everyone’s arch nemesis – Oda Nobunaga. So instead of spending time showing how everyone put aside their differences to put Tenkai’s evil resurrection plan down (and maybe build those darn bonds Ieyasu keeps going on about), we only got 12 mins of it. Add to that the fact that those 12 mins were so sloppy in animation, narration and plot, I’m one unhappy and unsatisfied viewer.
What should’ve been a kickass all out fight was a lukewarm gun battle. Seriously? Bullets against an evil transparent spirit?! Said bullets are courtesy of Saika whom now everyone refers to as Third Gen. Since when did this happen? There was no explanation as to how her being Third Gen had any greater significance in leading the charge against Oda, was there? What about Oichi? Oda’s little sister gets used as a vessel to resurrect the Demon King and things don’t go as planned. Tenkai’s out in a swift and we’re just as lost as he is about how things went wrong. Never mind, moving on. Oichi’s now the new Demon King and is all out evil with her glowing red eyes, until Matsu-nee gets her to snap out of it by appealing to her humanity. Sure that’s an often used trope but I was very disappointed at how easy it was to just break Oichi like that. At least fight back a few more times and struggle more before realising that oh, I had a husband and yeah I really should remember the good times I had with him and stop being a mean Demon King…
All the lovey dovey-ness was kinda unnecessary. What’s up with resolving crushes? Maeda Kenji finally gets to Saika’s heart with her putting a bullet through him as a price no less but whoa, Kenji had some cheesy I-will-fight-to-the-death for you and it’s-a-man’s-job-to-protect-his-woman lines =.= Kasuga’s still as tsundere even when she’s all-too-suddenly found by Sarutobi, thinking of her dearest Kenshin-sama’s arms while in Sarutobi’s arms… right. Then we have what I just simply do not understand and Fuma probably agrees with me – Tsuruhime’s crush on Fuma. What’s the point in this storyline here because it’s not even funny the way she sparkles even as the black feathered shinobi’s stealthily avoids her. Lastly, this being Sengoku of course the fujoshi fans need the bromance. Nice to see that even Tenkai had someone waiting for him to return safely in the form of bumbling Kobayakawa. The clincher though for this week, goes undoubtedly to Sanada’s headbump on a suprised Ieyasu. Didn’t think the baby cub of Kai would actually put his spears down huh?
Thankfully there was still some semblance of the quality of pre episode 10 Sengoku Basara: Judge End. Honda robot is still fighting the old man, plum purple Chousoukabe is still going at it at bug-green Mouri and sidekicks Kojurou finally gets into action against mummy Otani’s blue crystal balls. There’s no loser in the Ieyasu-Sanada fight but will the same be true as Date finally gets to meet Ishida in a fight again? Hopefully that fight redeems this episode!
