Fall In 急転直下
Ah, the sick boyfriend episode… eh? Already?!
We’ve come to the shoujo trope that is the sick boyfriend, except that said boyfriend isn’t actually Erika’s boyfriend per se (yet?), even if she ends up realising she’s really fallen for him. It’s awfully early to be playing the sick boyfriend card but if you think about how this gave the anime a chance to explain just how warped Kyouya’s emotional spectrum is, it all makes sense.
As it turns out, Kyouya’s own parents are separated where he’s currently living with his dad (chibi Kyouya was soooooo cute!!!). The sick puppy has no one taking care of him but he’s fine with it since that’s how it’s always been anyway. So much for the prince-like picture perfect life huh? He doesn’t like depending on anyone even in his frail state (oh how he walked into the door was just so funny) and thinks that girls only take care of others just so they can feel good about themselves. I kinda know where he’s coming from but it does seem a bit extreme right? Maybe that’s a consequence of being so good-looking? That everyone around you just seems pretentious and fake? Kyouya likes dogs but doesn’t want to own one after the last one died. He’s afraid of feeling upset when it dies so just the thought of that alone shuns him away from ever owning a dog ever again. Maybe in the same way then that he doesn’t dare to fall in love for fear of the only outcome he’s ever witnessed – his parents’. Kyouya’s the real pure-love one here. He’s basically not giving love a chance because he doesn’t believe he can have one that’s purely based on that, love. He thinks so little of others’ emotions, which explains his sadistic tendencies right? So no real dog but at least he’s now got poochie and how do you expect a girl to not blush at that straightforward declaration Kyouya?! You’ve really no idea on love yourself too right?! Don’t go telling off poochie that she doesn’t know true love when she’s looking straight at it!
Erika can take care of Kyouya because she’s his dog. It’s her right and her right only (as a self-admitted dog) to take care of her master. San-chan (Kayano Ai) really deserves to win best-friend-of-the year. She is spot on with her advice and has a level head on her shoulders unlike Marin and Tezuka who this time, compare summer holidays. Kayano Ai incidentally, voiced Kyouya seiyuu Sakurai Takahiro‘s love interest in Sukitte ii na yo, a personally highly recommended shoujo anime. Further back, Sakurai’s character in Ano Hana also fell in love with Kayano Ai’s Menma, albeit a one-sided one. In Sakurasou, Sakurai’s character pushes the male lead into admitting he likes Kayano Ai’s character so it’s nice to see the role reversal here with San-chan egging Erika on to admit her feelings for Kyouya.
Except Kyouya brushes it off and cruelly laughs at Erika’s jealousy-filled declaration, “your love for me is mistaken”. You’re the one who’s mistaken Kyouya! You rescued her from evil Kimura last episode and called her yours! It’s little wonder Erika’s confused at this fake-but-beginning-to-look-awfully-real relationship when you love her as a dog. Seems like the prince is afraid of letting himself fall truly in love. But can he help himself though? And can you resist finding out what happens through reading the manga? Doki-doki right? Welcome to shoujo and a good one at that ^_^
