Yokohama Disturbance Part VII「横浜騒乱編 VII」
I love that Mahouka is continuing the action in the penultimate episode here but it does also signify that we’re not going to get much by way of plot resolution, not that it matters since the action’s so good! I mean, Shiba Tatsuya unleashed is in kami/god/messiah mode, what’s not to like?! And everyone else has really stepped up too!
Rather than focusing on Tatsuya, I liked how everyone got a bit of air time themselves, even a teacher who used magic to help his students escape. From the terrorists we see they have more than just guns and bombs, we got the mobile suit robots seen in the OP, phantom spirits and even chemical warfare in the form of bugs trying to take down a helicopter. Mahouka’s not to be outdone of course – who knew Honoka could cast an invisibility spell?
The students prove they have what it takes to keep themselves and their peers safe. This might not work in other animes but remember we’re talking about students who go to magic school, training to become the defence force of their country. Tatsuya’s officially a Special Officer and the Crimson Prince has actual combat experience too so for them to annihilate the terrorists isn’t something new, even if their peers can’t stomach that much bloodshed. Saegusa and Jumonji are clan leaders so they’ve probably seen and attended enough meetings to keep their heads squarely on their shoulders in the face of such destruction and threats. What I wonder about though, is how Erika and Leo can nonchalantly cut down the enemies as though they’ve done it before? I know Kirihara can since back in the first arc, he took out a terrorist during the raid with Tatsuya and Jumonji. Even Saegusa was shocked to witness Tatsuya’s vapourising style of getting rid of the enemies so how are Erika and Leo so ok with things? Saegusa’s ok with using her ice magic to rain ice picks on the terrorists but Miyuki takes it a step further by outrightly freezing people to death (she’s so cool in her own right this girl!). At least Miyuki seems upset with what she’s had to do.. There was surprisingly a lot of bloodshed this episode, no doubt due to Ichijo’s messy psychopass-style of shooting people to blow up from within. I would’ve imagined this being aired on TV that there’d be more censorship like when Kirihara was severed almost in half. I really liked that scene where he jumped to protect Sayaka and Kei shielded Kanon. It was just a split second but goes to show how these guys will protect their girls!
So. Tatsuya goes all out as the unleashed Special Officer of the JSDF. He’s got the suit he ordered and designed the prototype for so now there’s a unit of flying soldiers. I’m not a fan of that suit though, it just looks too villainous lol. Tatsuya’s bad-ass self is vapourising unmanned drones and even resurrecting people! That’s against the rules isn’t it? Wasn’t he suppose to be able to do so only for himself? He’s also gone all out with teasing Miyuki at the end there softly whispering into her ear…
Which reminds me – going back to the plot of Mahouka in which I’m not a fan of the siscon/brocon storyline, I suspect that with just one episode left, we’re not going to find out about the Shiba/Yotsuba family and whether Tatsuya’s duty as bodyguard was really just his aunt’s way of keeping a leash on him. We’re probably also not going to find out about Yanagi, who’s unit Tatsuya joined and whom is about the only other person previously mentioned to be of the same level of awesomeness as Tatsuya. Looking at the bigger terrorism plot too, will we find out why the Great Asian Alliance think they can tackle and win Tatsuya and his high school peers + JSDF + Police? Somebody obviously didn’t think their strategy through or maybe Zhou Gongjin sold them out? What about the ten clans protecting Japan? What do Saegusa, Jumonji and Ichijo as next generation clan heads have to do in their current capacity? There’s really loads more to resolve in Mahouka and I honestly doubt the final episode can wrap things up. Maybe there’ll be a season 2, maybe it’ll be an open ending spurring viewers to buy and read the light novels instead. Either way, my expectations have drastically fallen along the way since way back in episode 01 so I’ll be happy if the Mahouka students make it out alive at least, and if Erika finally gets together with Leo ^^
