It is only the second episode and I don’t know why I love KimiUso so much, but I just do. It is so sweet. And yet so sad. But so so stunning. I love it.

From Friend A to substitute, (as well as being former child prodigy turned ex-celebrity – the classical music world sure is small) it would appear that Kousei has risen in Kaori’s rankings. I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. The poor boy is so conflicted, that it is just so painful to listen to his thoughts. From the beginning of the episode, there were so many tell tale signs of his inner struggles. The way he reacted when being in a musical hall; the way he reacted to the performances; the way he screamed himself awake; the way he wanted to listen to Kaori’s playing and yet at the same time he did not want to. Kousei has got really serious issues, and the way his thoughts are being presented just makes me crave for more. I so so want to know more of why he is the troubled and wounded character that he is.

With Kousei, I pay attention because he somehow exudes a sort of deafening silence (I love the way Hanae speaks in those hushed tones; it is so chilling and yet very serene at the same time). On the other hand, whenever Kaori comes on screen, I pay attention because everything seems to sparkle and dazzle in the most inviting manner. There is this very radiant atmosphere about her that makes everything more colourful. It is such a contrast to Kousei’s monotone, and I just love how these two very different personalities are put against each other. While Kaori is bright and cheerful, Kousei is dark and muted. However, for all the gripe that he has with the piano, it did seem like he was enjoying trying not to enjoy himself during the performance. The tap tap tapping of his fingers was a dead giveaway. Of course, Kaori’s uproarious performance was also partially why Kousei probably enjoyed himself more than he expected. Having been told by his mother that it was meaningless if he did not play to perfection, the freedom with which Kaori played and the happiness that exuded from her performance probably confused him, but also created such an impression on him. That gleam in his eyes when he heard her play – he could not help but be mesmerised.

And yes, this week we did indeed get to listen to her play. Gosh, it was… different. In a good way, or a bad way, it really depends on the individual. While the audience loved her performance (she received the audience choice and therefore advances to the next round), the judges were not too keen. It isn’t that the judges are simply too rigid and conformist to understand Kaori’s playing (okay, judge Kazama aside), it is just that this is the way classical music is. The foundation of classical music is to adhere as closely as possible to the composer’s directions. And because of that, a blatant disregard for the said performance directions would score absolutely no points at all with the judges in a classical music competition. As Kousei mentioned, it is a classical music competition after all, not Kaori’s own recital. So it was understandable that the she was ‘X’ marked by all the judges.

Upon her introduction, many could guess that Kaori was given the role of the carefree one, kind of a foil to Kousei’s character. With this episode, the answer was made very clear – upon hearing her play Beethoven the way she did, I am certain that Kaori is one daredevil of a rebel. Beethoven was known for breaking the rules and his very unorthodox composition pretty much ‘revolutionised’ classical classical music. And for Kaori to have played Beethoven’s violin sonata with a complete disregard for all the performance directions in the way that she did was sure indication of her boldness. Pushing the boundaries with the work of THE composer known for pushing boundaries, the writer could not have picked a more fitting piece to show us Kaori’s audacity. It’s like what judge Kazama said, she might as well have been picking a fight with the composer. まあー, it was a treat of a scene all the same.
