Two guys, one bed. Oh dear…

KyoAni is really laying it on thick with the bromance. When I picked up this season of Free!, I was hoping for a different kind of fanservice. Instead, I get the kind of fanservice that calls for two guys sharing a bed. Ah, sighs… Yes, the hotel scene was the highlight of this episode, proving that this was a frustratingly dull episode because other than that there really wasn’t much to laugh about. It was so dull that I can’t even bring myself to swoon over the Australian national swimmers. That blond swimmer had really pretty hair though~ anyway, the good thing is that Haru is finally out of his slump (wow, that smile was so bright and genuine it was blinding), having found IT. That’s right, IT

Having watched this episode, we now know how and why Rin managed to convince Haru to go with him to Australia. Turns out, it was because Haru was sulking about his fight with Mako. According to Haru, it was his first fight with Mako, and he was evidently at quite a loss. There there swishy, I am sure captain will forgive you. Like what Rin said, it is just one little fight. There is no point getting upset over it. He and Sousuke fight all the time! Golly, soooo many things that I can make fun of. But seeing as Haru is finally happier and he and Rin have made up, I shall spare the boys for this episode’s review.

There was a whole lot of English in this episode, and it took a lot not to cringe. Not at Mamoru’s or Shimazaki’s English, but the other people’s. It just felt out of place, despite the fact that they were in Australia. The good thing is, it looks like the pair are set to return to Japan in next week’s episode (probably nationals?) and I am looking forward to Haru’s reunion with the Iwatobi swim team. His moodiness has dragged this series down for far too many episodes, so here’s hoping the last episode ends on a positive note.

Muscle-scope. First sign of muscles: 18 minutes 35 seconds (just one more episode of this.. thank goodness).

  1. This episode is more exciting to watch if you’ve visited Sydney, or are from there.
Free’s Australian fanbase has praised how well Kyoani illustrated the various sights and landmarks of Sydney, down to the famous meat pie shop that Rin and Haru are eating at in the endcard.

(Note: Telstra is an Australian telecoms company. ANZ is the Bank of Australia and New Zealand.)

Special praise is given to how faithfully Kyoani illustrated Sydney’s Olympic Park and Aquatic Centre(home of Sydney’s 2000 Olympics), down to the minute details.

The English voicework was done at the US branch of a Japanese voice acting company headed by veteran voice actor Tomokazu Seki. You’re listening to US people putting on Australian accents, which explains why the English may have felt off.
Still better quality than other anime with ”English” in them though.

PS. Rin’s girlfriend is closer then you think, Russell!!!!!!

    • hello again~ i’ve never said it before, but i really appreciate your informative comments! lol anyway, i guess this episode was a little too draggy for my liking. and so it just got me quite impatient. but yes, i definitely appreciate KyoAni’s attention to detail, as well as the english effort. like you said, better quality than other anime with “english” lol. and oooh.. rin’s girlfriend? that’ll be an interesting turn of events ^^
