Now I get why Miyuki was conspicuously absent the last 2 weeks. Her presence just steals the thunder and underscores the entire episode be it narrative, characters or plot!

We usually remember first and last impressions. This week, Mahouka started with Miyuki hugging her oniisama from behind on a motorcycle, and ended with her realisation that she actually wanted to sneak a lips-to-lips kiss on a sleeping Tatsuya. Does anyone remember what happened in between?!? Maybe you did but see what this first and last impression has done to me? It’s taken attention on everything and everyone else away because this episode ended with Miyuki blushing while reminiscing where oniisama touched her (face, face!), simultaneously rolling in bed in JUST her underwear. Was this in the LN? I can only hope that this set up has some significance in future episodes. So much for insisting you do not see your blood brother as anything else but that Miyuki. Tsk.

Then again, it is hard to resist Tatsuya’s sleeping face. I suppose home is the only one true resting place where he can be at ease to doze off on the living room sofa. For a guy who’s got combat experience, it’s surprising he didn’t pick up on Miyuki’s approaching presence – was it on purpose? Hmm. Anyway, it goes to show that no matter how badass he is, Tatsuya is human. We also got to see for once that his regenerating spell isn’t immune to the effects of sleeping gas magic!

Harry Potter had the truth serum. Well, Mahouka shows us this week that they have a truth spell, sleeping gas spell and even one for memory loss, to forget. As it turns out, Sekimoto does act to sabotage/gain from the thesis competition. He’s an academic-industrial spy and tried to steal information from the robotics club room (complete with a very realistic female robot housekeeper/security guard) by releasing sleeping gas on an unguarded Tatsuya. Of course such efforts are thwarted and go to waste when Tatsuya figured out what was happening and turned the tables on Sekimoto by confronted him together with new Disciplinary Committee Chairwoman Chiyoda Kanon. Is he working for the Great Asian Alliance? Probably, since Lu Gonghu appeared.

I liked that the spotlight turned to Saegusa and Mari this week. Mahouka seems to rotate the spotlight among the closest supporting characters and for that I’m grateful, even if it means they have a use-and-discard approach to all other characters (I want more Crimson Prince and Kurihara!). We previously saw Mari and Chiba oniisan (i.e. Erika’s blood-related older brother) during the Nine Schools Competitions. This time, they’re at the hospital Chiaki is at for what I can only assume to be guard duty. We got plenty of action scenes this week courtesy of Lu Gonghu aka the man-eating tiger planning to take out Chiaki before Zhou Gongjin got to her. Chiba Naotsugu (Chiba Susumu) is pretty badass himself with his illusion blade though he did still get his forearm badly injured by Lu. You think Tatsuya’s scary when Miyuki gets hurt? Then witness scary Mari confronting the guy who hurt her man. Naotsugu’s got his illusion blade but Mari’s got some scary twin-blade action going on, capable of almost slicing off Lu’s arms if she wanted to for sure. Together with Saegusa and Tatsuya, the 3 of them defeat Lu (when one particular western spy couldn’t) but the main perpetrator Chen has fled. He’ll be back for the relic and you can count on the military’s IT system to be hacked again for information.

Last but not least, I realise there are lots of characters but I really wish the veteran seiyuus have more lines because they’re not as in as many shows as the young ones – Yusa Kouji‘s bewitching voice worked on Chiaki and me, I miss Chiba Susumu’s frantic/panic voice and though I got my dose of Okiayu Ryoutarou from this week’s Love Stage, I really wanted more Kokonoe sensei – I haven’t heard that voice/register since his role of Reever in D. Gray Man… >.<
