Yokohama Disturbance Part II 「横浜騒乱編 II」
This really should’ve been titled the flirting episode.
Episode 20 starts off with none other than biggest non-blood related flirt Saegusa inviting Tatsuya into a private library room – the number of hanky panky things that can go on in those rooms if not for the surveillance cameras! We’ve seen Tatsuya in all his badass awesome-ness and the word ‘stoic’ never fails to describe his utter lack of emotions in the cold, aloof personality he has. Yet this guy has some serious sense of humour! We’ve actually seen it before back oh so many episodes ago (in the first arc if I remember correctly) when he and Miyuki were playing up their sibling love in front of their friends. Saegusa thinks she’s one-up on the stoic first year freshman by cornering him into her bidding in the library room but if it weren’t for the surveillance camera, Tatsuya claims he’d have laid claim to his dear senpai already. Now who’s the one truly cornered?! Gee Tatsuya you and your sadistic humour haha but Saegusa did deserve it for whining like that. Speaking of which, I’m really liking her seiyuu Hanazawa Kana‘s performance in Mahouka so far. It’s a very welcomed departure from her younger girl roles such as in Nagi no Asukara and Coppelion. The onee-san in her shows through this sly, wry performance as Saegusa and along with Tsunemori in Psycho Pass and her psycho Rize in Tokyo Ghouls, it seems Hanazawa’s successfully reaching new heights in challenging her career :)
Back to flirting. After turning the tables on Saegusa, Tatsuya flirts with counsellor Ono to fish confidential information out of her, because he knows he can. Safe to say that Ono has a soft spot for this student, even if it means breaking her vow of confidentiality for him. I’m not a fan of Ono and her busty self so I for one am glad the focus on Tatsuya-Ono didn’t linger any longer. The scene then cuts to the only true couple in this show – Kanon Chiyoda and Isori Kei, as Kanon literally gets her hands all over her fiance Isori-kun. Is it just me or do the character designs of Isori and Miki seem a bit too similar to tell them apart? Kanon, Isori and Tatsuya are exiting somewhere when they notice they’re being watched by a fellow First High student. What’s with this girl hanging around outside? At first I thought she might add to the list of Tatsuya’s admirers but it seems she’s got a personal grudge against Tatsuya, so much so she’s willingly working through Zhou Gongjin to keep tabs on Tatsuya for the Great Asian Alliance (GAA). She’s not the only person keeping watch on Tatsuya and his friends (he’s really made friends along the way hasn’t he? aww… good on ya Tatsuya!). Mizuki notices someone casting a wide net around school to watch them and when the clique goes for afternoon tea at their usual cafe, someone is tailing them. The Erika + Leo + Miki combi strikes to take that on the person who claims to be working for the Western forces by spying on the First High students to make sure they are no spies amongst them who would lead confidential East documents to illegal hands. Sort of ironic isn’t it? I spy to see if you have spies? =_= It’s great to see the trio in action, even if Miki’s in the background putting up ancient charms. And isn’t it great to see weed students hold their own? The poor spy got taken out by the GAA’s man-eating tiger Lu Gonghu in the end though. That guy’s fearsome and fierce so I’d like to see Tatsuya take him on.
Last but not least is the police inspector Chiba openly checking out Fujibayashi Kyouko (Itou Shizuka) whom we’ve seen before to be an acquaintance of Tatsuya’s from the military. She is the second lieutenant from the 101 Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion, the daughter of the Fujibayashi Family, and the granddaughter of creepy no-eyes Kudou Retsu. The police are there to fish information concerning the GAA out of the snake den cafe/bar while Fujibayashi is there to… check out Chiba? Seem like it since she knows who he is (to his shy blushing delight) but it’s more likely that she’s getting information on the GAA for the military. Is it any coincidence that this bar’s owners are the parents of the manager of the cafe bar Tatsuya and co. frequent? I wonder if Tatsuya knows of this link. Something major is up if the police, military and government intelligence service are all closing in on the GAA. Compared to the first 2 arcs though, the build-up here seems more smooth and relevant so fingers crossed this last arc plays out better.
Last but not least, Miyuki’s conspicuously missing this episode and it really just isn’t the same without her fawning over her oniisama! O.o
