“The Manga Artist’s Brain, Nozaki-kun”
And Mikorin is back and bringing down the house with his false suaveness and demanding, childlike personality!
The first half of the episode was fun but it wasn’t the focal point – in my honest opinion – of the show. That comes later, but I’ll put that under “episode highlights” because it so deserves it. Anyways, the beginning of the episode Nozaki basically “ponders his lack of hobbies” on days where he’s finished his ongoing manuscript and has nothing to do except wait until the next one comes along. In true Chiyo fashion, she decided to help him have a little more fun by doing non work-related things like going to the movies, going shopping, checking out clothes and so on… Unfortunately this backfires as Nozaki takes his work literally everywhere he goes. The movie ends up being source material for his artwork, he ends up taking pictures of the food at the restaurant they go to in order to get some food references for his next chapter, and stepping into a clothes shop results in a whole load of misunderstanding on some passersby’s end, as Nozaki tries to get Chiyo into a sailor outfit so that he can take pictures of her. Yeah, choose your words wisely, Nozaki! Of course, when she refuses to don them Nozaki decides to literally try on the clothes for himself. *sigh* Why, Nozaki, why?? Poor Chiyo, though, just watched this all with that exasperated resignation of hers, but then again, her crush on Nozaki is pretty tough to stick all this stuff out!
The Characters/Episode Highlights
Now comes the best parts as guess who Chiyo and Nozaki meet while perusing a geek store except Mikorin, who is embarrassed at being caught looking at figurines. While Nozaki reassures him that he’s got a bunch of figurines too – art models are not the same, Nozaki – Mikorin manages to kick them both out of the store after Nozaki attempts to look for a doll fitting his Mikorin-inspired manga character. Okamoto does such a good job at Mikorin with that boyishly whiny and husky voice of his. It really fits Mikorin’s character and expressions so well and he gets so much screen time this episode!
My favourite part of the episode was when they’re all back at school and Chiyo asks Mikorin whether he’d be a model for their arts club and he vehemently refuses, until another art member comes up and asks him and he puts on his suave Mikorin persona. I loved how he just kind of slumped once they’d gone and he deflated pathetically, covered his face and sadly asked Chiyo whether she’d cancel for him but she flat out refused. He was adoooorable and his voice was just so cute and doleful. I “awww”ed out loud because it was just too cute! Mikorin had a number of ridiculous moments in this episode, like when he was panicking about his lack of modelling skill, which led him to practice by striking poses imitating his figurines, all of which were suggestive female poses, by the way, so he found himself sufficiently humiliated after that.
The next day the whole modelling thing didn’t go terribly badly for Mikorin, save for the really weird poses and emotions that the girls wanted him to position himself in. I think the cutest was Chiyo’s request for him to sit like Nozaki working on his manga at a desk, which he sort of did with a mixture of confusion and reluctance. Still, Chiyo seemed to appreciate it! Another great thing I found is that Nozaki was so right when he said that Mikorin had really begun to get closer with Chiyo and become more comfortable around her – which is of course why when Chiyo had to leave the room to get a drink and Mikorin was so offended by it that he demanded for her to come back and not leave him alone because he was lonely. He is just so cute and really, truly helpless and pathetic and I loved it when Chiyo just glared at him and called him a pain. Their relationship is hilarious to watch because he really is so comfortable around her and takes advantage of her but is still so dependent on her to look after him. I just think the two of them are utterly adorable and they have such a unique and entertaining dynamic!
This was such an enjoyable episode and most of it was because of Mikorin, who everybody loves, and the fact that he and Chiyo had some great screen-time together being the loveable dorks they are. Next episode we get to see the hilarity that is Kashima and Hori, which should be pretty funny too!
