Act 1: Politician and Terrorist (政治家とテロリスト)

Nagi: A beer right after a bath? What luxury. By the way, why am I the one getting coffee?
Kagaya: Didn’t you drive here? If you’re staying over then I won’t mind bringing out the sake. So what are you going to do?
Nagi: I’m fine with coffee then, because you look really perverse right now.
Kagaya: You’re thinking too much.
Nagi: Did you meet Kasao’s ex-chauffeur?
Kagaya: Yea, I’ll talk about that later. Look at these first, here is the research I’ve done on Kasao and what Manabe dug up on Akagi Shouichirou. I also got Manabe to research anew on the explosion case 14 years ago.
Nagi: As expected of you. So you’re thinking that Akagi had a part in the explosion case?
Kagaya: Yea. Someone who had something against Akagi died in that incident and that was what caught my eye. At that time, Akagi was the cabinet minister of construction. During that season’s nominations of contractor selection for a work order by the ministry, there were suspicions that he accepted a cash bribe of 30 million yen from Wabe Construction to get it into a favourable position.
Nagi: That will be a huge scandal, but was such news released?
Kagaya: There were suspicions surrounding him but in the end he was never arrested.
Nagi: Because the Public Prosecutor didn’t take action?
Kagaya: No, the prosecutor began investigations on the basis of suspected contract bribery, but because of the explosion, they were forced to abandon the investigations.
Nagi: On that day, the men in the adjoining room… so that two were the targets.
Because the people involved in the bribery case died?
Kagaya: Did you know that already?
Nagi: No, the only thing I knew was that there were 2 of them. Who died?
Kagaya: One of them was the director of sales from Wabe Construction, the other was Akagi’s previous secretary, the man who accepted the bribes.
Nagi: When you say “previous”, you mean he quitted his job by the time of the incident?
Kagaya: Yea. Suspicions were casted onto him and he quitted shortly after.
Nagi: Akagi was afraid that investigations would reach him, so he thought of disposing of the two who held the key to the evidence against him. There is a chance that he went to consult his brother about this and Kasao thought of a plan for Akagi to not get suspected. That was the explosion case.
Kagaya: It’s hard to accept that someone would set off a bomb for such a reason.
Nagi: You’re right, under normal circumstances, someone won’t think of such a stupid measure. Everyone would assume that the two of them got caught up in an unfortunate incident and that was the effect they were aiming for. Presently, did the police investigate Akagi as a suspect of the explosion case? There’s no way they would have thought that an active minister would mastermind a terrorist attack out of sheer selfishness. The two people whom they would have been investigating on died, with their deaths Akagi was able to carry on without any problems. He successfully prolonged his life as a politician. Even though the secretary had already quit at that time, Akagi would have had to share the weight of the crime with his secretary if things get bad. Akagi probably instructed his secretary to meet with Wabe Construction’s director of sales at that Chinese restaurant for some reason and Kasao planted the bomb there. You must have thought that something was out of place, that’s why you went all the way to Sapporo to get proof of it right? In this case, you would have to cast things like common sense aside.
Kagaya: You’re right. If we stick to the idea that “this is impossible”, we will overlook the truth. The information I got in Sapporo also supports your theory.
Nagi: Hm? Then I would really like to hear it.
It seems like Kasao met up very frequently with Akagi right before the explosion case. The ex-chauffeur said that he remember worrying about trouble, as the brothers seldom met up with each other. Kasao also frequented a hotel for secret meets up with someone while trying to avoid prying eyes. He was someone who always walked around with a huge group of body guards, but he chose to move by himself then, and it was strange.
Nagi: The one he was meeting up with in secret was probably Ou. But the one who holds the key to that secret is no longer in this world. The only one left would be Akagi himself.
Kagaya, I found the culprit who killed Kasao.
Kagaya: Really? Who was it?
Nagi: It was Hinou’s roommate. He lost his father to the explosion case, in other words, his actions were based on personal grudge. I got his confession, so there’s no doubt about it.
Kagaya: Let’s report this to the chairman as soon as possible.
Nagi: I don’t want the old man to know about it yet.
Kagaya: Why?
Nagi: There’s something I want to investigate further, but it is a personal issue so I can’t order you. You can decide whether to report it or not.
Kagaya: Is it absolutely necessary?
Nagi: Yes it is, to me.
Kagaya: I understand. But let me at least report that we’ve discovered the culprit’s motives. If I don’t do that, we won’t be able to hold the Koujinkai back.
Nagi: Yea, I’m sorry. I’ll try my best to finish it up soon.
I have to hurry.
Nagi: I’m sorry for not identifying myself over the phone earlier.
Akagi: What is your name?
Nagi: I can’t say that now.
I confronted Akagi Shouichirou in a room of a luxury hotel near the congress assembly hall of the Nagata ward. I found his cellphone number and contacted him, saying that I have something to tell him regarding Kasao and the explosion case 14 years ago. As promised, he appeared alone.
I conducted independent investigations on your brother, Kasao Yuuzo’s murder.
Akagi: If you’re saying that, does it mean that you’re from the Koujinkai?
Nagi: No, I’m unrelated to the Koujinkai. Well, I won’t deny that I’m yakuza, but who I am doesn’t matter now. Anyway, I found the culprit who killed Kasao.
Akagi: What did you say? Who is it? Have you told the police yet?
Nagi: No, I haven’t told the police and I don’t have plans to either. Do you hate your brother’s murderer?
Akagi: Of course. There won’t be anyone who doesn’t hate the murderer of their own flesh and blood.
Nagi: You’re right, that’s what you call sentiments. It seems that Kasao’s murderer was motivated by those same feelings.
Akagi: What do you mean?
Nagi: The person who shot Kasao was someone who lost his family member to the Toei Departmental Store explosion case. That person found out that your brother was the mastermind behind the explosion case and pulled the trigger on him.
Akagi: (Akagi laughs) What nonsense are you spouting? Yuuzo was the leader of Koujinkai at that time. As if he would cause such an unbelievable incident!
Nagi: Akagi-san, I was involved in that explosion case. If I say “Kagaishagawa”, you might have a rough idea on what I’m talking about. When I found out that Kasao’s murderer was someone who lost his family member to the explosion case, I felt like the sin I committed had been shoved into my face. I’ve come to believe that I have to bear that sin for the rest of my life. For that to happen, I have to know the entire truth behind that incident. That’s why I called you out, your previous secretary and the director of sales for Wabe Construction died in that explosion right? Because of that, the suspicions of bribery were never resolved and you were able to hold onto your life as a politician. Akagi-san, did you request the bomb from Kasao?
Akagi: It sounds as though you’re saying that I blew up a bomb just to kill the two of them who were in my way. That is nothing more than your fantasy, I am unrelated to that case.
Nagi: I’m not planning to blackmail you or reveal the truth to the public either. I just want to know, please tell me the truth.
Akagi: There’s nothing to tell.
Nagi: Akagi-san!
Akagi: Listen well, unless you’re someone with outstanding qualities, most politicians spend their lives campaigning for elections. Campaigns require money and to be honest, I’ve accepted money before. But that bribery was different. I don’t deny that it was bribery, but the one who accepted the money from Wabe Construction was my secretary. It didn’t go into my pocket. That’s why, no matter how much you investigate, I will still be innocent. There’s no way I would kill those two, right?
Nagi: You have no intentions of admitting to it no matter what happens huh?
Akagi: I can’t admit something which isn’t the truth. I’m sorry but I’ll have to excuse myself. (Akagi leaves room)
Nagi: 2 days ago, I called Akagi again. Surprisingly, he said that he has been waiting for my call.
(Flashback)
Akagi: The other day, I was rather curt towards you because I had my guard up against you. But I’m starting to realise the importance of what we talked about. I don’t really remember what happened during the incident, but I might be starting to recall something. That’s why, I have the urge to tell you about the feelings which I’ve sealed away till recently. If only my brother listened to me that night…
Nagi: I proceeded to the designated apartment in Akasaka.
Akagi: Thanks for coming.
Nagi: It’s fine.
Akagi: I was really relieved that you came, right? (Man points gun at Nagi)
Man 1:  Exactly.
Nagi: So it was just as I expected.
Akagi-san, is this your answer? Do you really have nothing to say about the case 14 years ago?
Akagi: No. What on earth are you trying to do by bringing up such an old case? Do you want to see me repenting for my sin in prison?
Nagi: Heh… If I can see that, it’s definitely something I want to witness. In that case I would be satisfied, that you have accepted what you did during that incident.
Akagi: If there’s anyone to be blamed, it should be Yuuzo. He was the one who thought of that method.
Nagi: But, you were the one who benefitted.
Akagi: Even so, it wasn’t something I did. But I wouldn’t have expected someone who knows the secret to appear now, that man had always been too slack with his work. Goodness, it’s tough to have such a stupid brother. He’s an eyesore, take him away.
Man 1: Don’t worry.
Man 2: We will take the responsibility of disposing him such that he never appears before sensei again.
Akagi: Yea, I’ll leave him to you.
Man 1: Get on.
Nagi: Hmph, you’re full of openings.
Man 1: This punk!
Nagi: Knives are dangerous… right?
(People walk by)
Nagi: Do you still want to continue? I don’t mind, but this will get out to the police.
Man 1: Damn it.
Nagi: See you then.

Act 2: Foreign Child (異国の子供)

(Doorbell rings)
Nagi: Yo, sorry for coming so suddenly in the middle of the night. Were you were already asleep?
Kagaya:  No.
Nagi: I’ll just do whatever I have to, you can go to sleep first.
Kagaya: What did you come for?
Nagi: Nothing much, I just stopped by. I’ll be borrowing your shower.
Kagaya: Are you injured?
Nagi: Huh? Oh this? This isn’t my blood.
Kagaya: Nagi, what have you been doing? If you’re doing something dangerous, then I can’t let you move alone anymore.
Nagi: Don’t put on such a scary expression. Weren’t you going to believe in me?
Kagaya: I do believe in you, but that is different from this. If something were to happen to you…
Nagi: It will be fine, I’m not doing anything bad so don’t worry. I will put an end to this soon… after that, let’s do that! We can go to the hot springs somewhere and relax. Alright?
Kagaya: Is there nothing I can do for you?
Nagi: Don’t make such a face, if I ever need help, you’ll be the first person I tell.
(Nagi sighs and remembers Kagaya’s words)
Kagaya: Is there nothing I can do for you?
Nagi: I’m the one at fault. Even though I’m fully aware of his feelings, I can only spin pretty words of lies. No matter how many women I sleep with, none of them could become someone important to me. The one whom I thought most of was always Kagaya. But I always kept him at a distance with the reason that I can’t accept men, and make use of him at the same time. There’s no one whom I need more than Kagaya. He has always watched over and yearned for this me who is cowardly, weak and unfair. I have to face his feelings.
Kagaya: Are you going to sleep here?
Nagi: Yea, but before that, can you hold me? Or was that too blunt?
Kagaya: I’m just too surprised that I froze.
Nagi: And your answer is?
Kagaya: Are you teasing me?
Nagi: Why? I won’t make this kind of jokes with you. Understand that I’m for real.
Kagaya: But, you’ve been saying that it is impossible, why suddenly… (Nagi kisses Kagaya)
Nagi: Don’t grumble about such trivial things when the other party is finally in the mood. If you’re a man, then keep quiet and eat the meal which has been set before you. I want you, I’m finally able to admit this honestly. So please hold me. I want to feel you, I want to get aroused with your touch. I want you to make my entire being yours. Say, what have you been doing to me in your mind? The other day, you said that you were embracing me lustily in your mind right? How about turning that all into reality tonight?
Kagaya: That won’t be possible. If I were to turn it all into reality, one night won’t be enough.
Nagi: You closet pervert. You totally showed no signs of it but what have you done to me in your mind? There’s no need to hold back anymore, do whatever you want to me.
Kagaya: Is it alright?
Nagi: Yea, I’m really aroused right now. My body is getting hot in anticipation of your touch.
Kagaya: If you put it that way, wouldn’t my self-restraint have been in vain?
Nagi: It hasn’t, I’m only feeling like this because it’s the present. Because I’m finally able to admit that I want to be held by you, I’m able to relax like this now.
Kagaya: I see, then my perseverance wasn’t in vain.
Nagi: That’s right, it wasn’t. Meeting you and becoming your partner, that you didn’t choose anyone else but me… For me, there wasn’t anything that I got from you which was in vain.
Kagaya: Nagi?
Nagi: It’s nothing, I’m just a little overwhelmed with feelings. When I think that I’m finally going to become Kagaya’s, don’t tell me this is how a bride who is about to have her bridal night feels?
Kagaya: You can really joke in this situation.
Nagi: Is that bad? Ah, don’t tell you wanted to see me blush furiously and hide my face with my hands?
Kagaya: No, I’ll pass on that.
Nagi: Then isn’t this fine?

Decoy Series (22)

Kagaya: Does it hurt?
Nagi: I’m alright. I knew it, I can’t… No, it doesn’t hurt. But somehow it feels super embarrassing, I don’t want my face to be seen.
Kagaya: This is the first time I’m seeing you this shy. So cute.
Nagi: Shut up! Kagaya you pervert, closet pervert, old man!
Kagaya: But I think I haven’t done anything that dirty yet…
Nagi: Was that my… sweet spot?
Kagaya: That’s right. I’ll do something that feels even better, so show me your face. It’s really being sucked in to the hilt, even my finger feels like melting.
Nagi: If that’s the case, then hurry and enter me. I want to feel you.
Kagaya: Tell me if it gets too tight, I don’t want to force you. Nagi, does it feel bad?
Nagi: It’s alright, I’ll get used to it. Rougher, move it more intensely. I want to feel you, deeper.
Kagaya: Damn it, if you say something like that, my reasoning might leave me.
Nagi: It’s fine, just do that. When you’re embracing me in your mind, it isn’t something like that right? Good, yours feel really good…
Kagaya: Nagi…
Nagi: It’s really going right in, I feel weird. Good… it feels super good. Kagaya, let it out. Fill me with every drop you have.
Kagaya: Nagi, I love you.
Nagi: Yea, I know that. I know that.
Nagi: That is unexpected.
Kagaya: What is?
Nagi: Even after we do it, you’re clinging onto me like this. I thought you were cooler than this.
Kagaya: That’s because I’m with you.
Nagi: Say, in society’s point of view, what do you think is the dirtiest job of all?
Kagaya: Why this sudden question?
Nagi: Does it matter? So, what do you think it is?
Kagaya: The trading in drugs and weapons.
Nagi: That’s right, and in third place would be human trafficking. Depending on which country, it might actually be the most profitable.
Kagaya: You’re right about that, in that case, Japan would be a very welcoming country for that trade.
Nagi: Yea. It welcomes women sold from foreign countries. Even though America is said to be the country with the highest amount of human trafficking, the people trafficked from Mexico and Eastern Europe is said to exceed 10,000 every year. According to UN’s estimation, 150,000 people are trafficked every year and about half of that is made of children.
Kagaya: Nagi, why are you talking about this?
Nagi: Buying and selling of human lives, even in the present, it is something normal. A certain man I know was a victim as well. Do you not want to listen to a story like this?
Kagaya: No, if you want to tell me, I’ll listen till the end. Continue with it.
Nagi: One of my acquaintances was born in China. China is another country which had a prosper market of human trafficking. Children who were bought for a few thousand yen would be sold for tens of thousands of yen. The man I knew was one of those children, hevwas called “Xiao Cong”.
At time, I was called “Xiao Cong” and Hinou was call “Yu Ling”.
Xiao Cong had no memories of his parents, the earliest memories he had was begging with the other children. That was the job he was given. With just the thoughts of not wanting to get beaten by the controller or having his meals withheld from him, that was how he lived day by day. But even during those miserable times, he had a good friend and ally, Yu Ling. Neither of them knew their ages but Xiao Cong looked up to the kind Yu Ling like an elder brother. One day, the two of them were sold to a mafia leader as brothers and they became the subjects of his perverse games. Especially Yu Ling, he was given much affection because of his beautiful features.
(Flashback)
Hinou: Don’t worry, I’ll go in place of Xiao Cong tonight.
Nagi: But…
Hinou: Because you’re my little brother.
Nagi: Xiao Cong had started to treat Yu Ling like an importance person and his real brother. Half a year after that, a new gardener joined the household. He was a quiet man who looked like he was in his early thirties. The two of them became close with the man. Yu Ling, who behaved like a good child in front of the other adults, started to expose his true unchild-like nature and cold demeanour to that man. The two of them had grown to hate the mafia leader. Two months later, one night, it was a night with a terrible thunderstorm. The thunder roared and the rain fell like waterfalls. The two of them were called to the mafia leader’s room as usual and made to service him.
Mafia leader: Yu Ling… You’re really beautiful.
Hinou: It’s all thanks to the boss.
Nagi: And in the next instance, Xiao Cong was unable to comprehend what happened and was dumbfounded. While the yakuza leader was engrossed with Yu Ling, the gardener broke in from the window. The gardener brandished a long knife in from of Xiao Cong and…
Mafia leader: Who’s that? Yu… Ling…
Nagi: Yu Ling smiled while he was bathed in blood, it was a faint and beautiful smile as though he was in a dream. The gardener was an assassin hired by an enemy organisation. He had asked Yu Ling to leave the window unlocked that night and Yu Ling cooperated. The both of them left the house together with the man and their led a peaceful life after that. They lived in a suburban area of Shanghai before migrating to Japan with fake passports. In Japan, the man had a mistress. The four of them moved around from place to place, passing off as a family. And eventually, the two children got used to the life in Japan. There was a strong bond between the two of them, but one day, they were asked to carry out a task for that man causing a huge uproar in the world. Xiao Cong was unable to bear the burden of the sin and he left the house with the conviction to live by himself. His thinking was too different from Yu Ling’s and they had to part. Say, this is just a scenario, but what will you do if I suddenly disappear one day? If I suddenly remove myself from your side.
Kagaya: I’ll find you, I will chase after you. No matter where you go, no matter how much time passes, I’ll definitely find you.
Nagi: I was happy, I felt saved by Kagaya’s strong feelings.

Act 3: Various Conclusions (それぞれの結末)

Shinozuka: Have you settled on what you will do from now on?
Yasumi: Yes. But before that, I have something that I must report. My memory has returned a few days ago. I have also remembered everything about this mission.
Shinozuka: Is that so, so you’ve remembered. I’m really glad about that.
Yasumi: I’m terribly sorry for causing you to worry.
Shinozuka: There’s no need to apologise, it was an unfortunate incident. Yasuhara, your memory might have returned, but let me say what I feel first. You have worked hard till now, but I think now is the time. I have a feeling that if you stay by Hinou’s side any longer, you will lose the real you. That’s why, come back. You have already done more than what you can.
Yasumi: No, I… I… Shinozuka councillor (Yasumi kneels on the ground) I’m really terribly sorry! I was unable to live up to your expectations.
Shinozuka: What’s wrong?
Yasumi: I’m begging you, please don’t ask any further.
Shinozuka: What is this?
Yasumi: As you can see, it’s a letter of resignation.
Shinozuka: I am asking you to tell me the reason why you wrote this. Yasuhara, even if the mission had ended in a failure, it doesn’t mean that your life in the police force has ended.
Yasumi: No, it has ended. I can no longer return to the police. I can’t return.
Shinozuka: Tell me the reason behind your sentence.
Yasumi: The mastermind behind that incident was Koujinkai’s ex-leader, Kasao. After finding out about that, I… I… I made an irreparable mistake. That’s why, I can no longer return to being my previous self. I am extremely grateful for the councillor’s friendship.
Shinozuka: Yasuhara…
Yasumi: Please don’t come any closer.
I respected him, he never shows anyone the pain in his heart but has always reached out to those who were suffering without hesitation. His strong way of living, smiling while hiding his pains deep within, I liked all of that. But I can no longer return to this person’s side.
The policeman Yasuhara is no longer around, the one who is standing here, is a filthy man who has fallen to Hinou’s place. Please forget about me.
Hinou: Where did you go to? I was really worried when you kept quiet and left.
Yasumi: I have no obligation to report my every move to you.
Hinou: You’ve lost all your charms, it’s as though you’re a different person. (Hinou kisses Yasumi)
Yasumi: Stop it.
Hinou: It’s alright, even if you rebel against me, you can only return to my place. Let’s go to the bed, I got into the mood.
Yasumi: I don’t want to.
Hinou: Then, shall we do it right here? I don’t mind…
Yasumi: Stop it! At such a place.
Hinou: You’re like a kid throwing a tantrum. Along with your charms, you’ve lost your sex appeal as well.
Yasumi: If you don’t like it then don’t hold me.
Hinou: I will, I will fill you countless times until my smell gets indelibly infused into your body.
Yasumi: One day, I will definitely kill you.
Hinou: Is that so? I will look forward to that day then.

Decoy Series (21)

Lady-boss:  Welcome.
Nagi: I am Asami from Nagase sensei’s office, thank you for always taking such great care of sensei.
Lady-boss: Thank you for your regular patronage.
Nagi: Just a while ago, I have gotten instructions from sensei to head here regarding urgent matters. I heard that sensei is currently in the midst of a meal with Akagi sensei.
Lady-boss: Yes, that is right.
Nagi: I’m sorry but may I visit their room?
Lady-boss: I think it will be alright, then let me accompany you to the room.
Nagi: Oh, that will not needed. Sensei is his usual room right at the end, the Kaede right? I have been in that room before.
Lady-boss: But…
Man: Oh, lady-boss!
Lady-boss: W-welcome!
Nagi: Please go, don’t worry about me.
Lady-boss: Then, I’m sorry about this.
Nagi: Now, what should I do? So many familiar faces I see on TV here. It’s true when they say that important political matters are done with both hands. Huh?
Man: Sensei, are you alright?
Akagi: Ha ha ha, I am alright, I’m just going to the toilet.
Nagi: Akagi Shouichirou. Seems like lady luck is smiling on me.
Nagi: Akagi sensei, it has been a while.
Akagi: Huh?
Nagi: Seems like you’re together with Nagase sensei tonight, I shouldn’t be saying this, but when he has had too much to drink, he likes to repeat himself numerous times. Isn’t it tough to be his partner?
Akagi: Well, you’re right, it is tough. I’m sorry but have I met you somewhere before?
Nagi: Oh dear, didn’t we just meet a few days ago?
Akagi: Is that so? Where?
Nagi: At a hotel and at an apartment. I’m finally certain of my own feelings after trying to get sensei’s take on the explosion case 14 years ago.
Akagi: Y-you are… What are you! Let me…
Nagi: I’m sorry sensei, but this is my answer. Please go along with my decision. (Nagi knocks Akagi out)
This is a show of compassion, if you’re still conscious, it will be more painful. (Nagi strangles and kills Akagi) I carved the sight of Akagi dying into my mind, I thought this was the minimum amount of respect I should show. I jammed the door to prevent it from opening and left the toilet. It only lasted about 5 to 6 minutes. I had the sudden thought; does Hinou feel the same way after finishing his job? There’s no trace of pleasure or guilt, but only a tiny trace of selfish sense of accomplishment. In the end, Hinou and I might be the same.
Nagi: It’s unlocked, Kagaya huh?
Kagaya: What’s with the luggage in the bedroom?
Nagi: Oh, that? I thought of going on a vacation or something.
Kagaya: That’s too much, it is as though you’re planning to run away. Where are you intending to go to?
Nagi: On a cruise around the world or something, but it’s still undecided.
Kagaya: Nagi!
Nagi: I don’t want to explain such troublesome things. Kagaya, I will quit the Dove.
Kagaya: What will you do after you quit? Where will you go?
Nagi: Nothing is confirmed yet, but I want to disappear somewhere.
Kagaya: So I don’t even have the right to know why?
Nagi: I just killed Akagi Shouichirou just now. I don’t think I left any evidence behind, but he’s someone huge in the political scene. The police will probably do a thorough investigation. If I get caught, it will trouble the old man Yashima. That’s why…
Kagaya: That’s not it, you’re just using that as an excuse to run away. I won’t ask why you killed Akagi, it was probably necessary for you. I will accept the fact of what you have done.
Nagi: Kagaya, but I can’t be by your side. I don’t deserve to be with you.
Kagaya: Are you trying to punish yourself by banishing yourself? Living alone might be easier for a man like you, but I won’t accept it. I need you, and I believe that it’s the same for you too. That’s why, no matter how painful it gets, you have to live with me. If you still insist on going off despite my words, I won’t stop you anymore. But, don’t forget what I said! I will continue to search for you. No matter how much time it takes, I will find you. If I hear anything about a man who looks like you, even if it’s at the ends of earth I will still go. If you want to mess with my life, then just leave!
Nagi: I won’t be able to go anywhere if you put it that way.
Kagaya: It’s fine if you don’t go anywhere, just stay by my side. For me, live together with me. I won’t be able to take over the burden that you’re carrying, but I will be there to lend you a hand from your side. From now on, if you ever lose your ability to walk, I will carry you on my back. Nagi, to have met someone whom I feel this way towards, this is true happiness for me. Please understand this.
Nagi: Kagaya understood, that the burden I’m shouldering can never be passed onto anyone else. He acknowledges me as an equivalent, as a man. That’s why, I have to swear too. That no matter what happens in future, I won’t let go of this hand which he has been holding on tightly to.

Act 4: Decoy (デコイ)

Nagi: 11.54pm, it will soon be December the 21st.
(Flashback)
Kagaya: Can I really trust you?
Nagi: Yea, trust me, I won’t disappear. I’m sorry for chasing you away, but I have to spend tonight alone.
Kagaya soon realised what day today was and left without asking why. It has been 15 years since then, the case is about to be closed. To me, it is a burden to be carried to my grave, it doesn’t matter if the case is closed. But tonight, there will be many who cry tears of regret.
Hinou: Kenji, it’s 12 midnight.
Nagi: As expected, I didn’t even sense his presence.
Hinou: You didn’t lock your front door, was it on purpose? Did you know that I was coming?
Nagi: I really forgot to. If I knew that you were coming, I would have bolted the door.
I thought that he might take some form of action, but to think that he would come in person like this.
Hinou: Seems like Akagi died of strangulation, it was your work right? Is that your form of justice?
Nagi: I’m just clearing up my own mess.
Hinou: I see, it’s very like you to conclude it in such a way. I feel like ending this as well. (Hinou points gun at Nagi)
Nagi: Are you going to kill me?
Hinou: I’m hesitating. As long as you’re still alive, I get so concerned that I can’t stand it. It feels like something is always weighing me down and I don’t like it.
Nagi: Same goes for me. Even though I really want to forget about you, you’re always weighing on a corner of my mind, it’s really bothersome.
(Hinou laughs) Hinou’s smile reminded me of when we were still young, back when we still called each other “Xiao Cong” and “Yu Ling”. I was able to survive because of Hinou, that’s why.
Pull the trigger if you want to.
Hinou: Do you want to die?
Nagi: Don’t joke with me, there’s no way I would want to die. Even someone like me is being needed by another man, an idiot who kept saying that he would chase me to the ends of earth if I disappeared. For his sake, I want to continue living. I think I have to live on, but half of my life belongs to you. So, do whatever you want.
Hinou: (Hinou sighs) Say, Kenji, those days when we were desperate to survive are already way past us.
Nagi: Huh?
Hinou: I give up. I’ll let you off. There’s more to death for someone who has led a life with regrets. You met Yasumi before right? I’m going to leave the country with him.
Nagi: Why?
Hinou: If we stay in Japan, he will crumble under the weight of guilt from having killed Kasao. Besides that, I’ve gotten sick of this country too.
Nagi: He’s leaving, with that man.
Wasn’t that man a policeman who investigated you? Isn’t it dangerous to be together?
Hinou: Right now, he can’t live without me. I’ve always been fond of weak men, that kind who makes me think that I have to protect them.
Nagi: Are you never coming back to Japan?
Hinou: I wonder. Even if I return, my face and name will probably be unrecognisable by then.
Nagi: Even so, I will still recognise you. No matter how much you change or how much time passes, I will definitely know that it’s you. I will never mistake another person for you.
Hinou: Kenji, you and I will always be accomplices till our death. Don’t think that this is over, or that you’ve settled everything by killing Akagi. You will carry the same burden as me and live on.
Nagi: My heart trembled, those words were cruel, but I heard it differently. “You and I are the same”, I feel like this is the first time I’m touching Hinou’s true nature. Hinou never tried to avert his eyes from what he has done. He has been shouldering the burden and living his life.
Hinou, I… Hinou…
Hinou: Goodbye, Xiao Cong, I won’t forget you. (Zai jian, Xiao Cong. Bu hui wang ji ni)
I won’t forget you.
Hinou: (Hinou returns to the apartment) He’s fast asleep, huh? He looks like an innocent child.
The human nature is a mysterious thing. After I found out that he was a police, I led him to believe that I fell for him and the joys of becoming intertwined with him was exceptional. He didn’t hesitate to contact Kasao and because of that, Kasao sent in a request for me to dispose of the hindrance. If Yasumi shows up on that rainy at the villa, I will come out of hiding to kill him and dispose of him. Kasao believed that that was what I would do and spilled the truth to Yasumi, before being killed by him. There was no way I would save Kasao. It was all an act to me, an act which was concluded by Kasao’s death. I was satisfied with the outcome and thought that I would kill Yasumi, who had fallen from the stairs, to avoid trouble later. But I was unable to, my feelings for him was more than what I thought.
Yasumi: (Yasumi wakes up) Where were you?
Hinou: I don’t have an obligation to report my every move to you, isn’t this what you said before? Don’t get angry, I’m just joking. I met up with an old friend.
Yasumi: Could that be, that yakuza?
Hinou:  Yea.
Yasumi: What were you talking with him?
Hinou: What’s this, are you jealous? Don’t worry, the one whom I like, is you. I can only love you.
“I love you”, what an intriguing phrase. The more I utter that phrase, the kinder I feel, as if I was sincerely in love with this man. There is a proverb which says that some lies can turn into the truth. One day, I might be unable to live without this man. On the other hand, it is also possible that this man can only feel hatred for me. It’s fine. If we’re all going to die one day, I’d prefer to be deeply stabbed by the knife of such untainted feelings.
Yasumi, we’ll be leaving tomorrow, got it? (Yasumi nods) Good boy, you should just follow me wherever I go. Did you know? The swallows which arrive in Japan for breeding will fly to Malaysia or Java for winter. Similarly, when humans feel like it, they can live without being in one place permanently. There’s no need to be tied down to a country or a way of life. You might have been torn from your pack, but you’re not alone. You have me, so there’s no need to feel insecure.
Hinou: I didn’t order coffee.
Master: It’s my treat, drink up.
Hinou: Thank you. (Hinou takes a sip) So this will be the last time I’m drinking Master’s coffee, I will miss it.
Master: Don’t just say things you don’t mean, there aren’t any feelings in your words.
Hinou: (Hinou smiles) That’s mean. Master, may I have that thing?
Master: Yea, it’s done. Take it.
Hinou: What a beautiful piece, Yasumi will like it too. I will put it up in our new home. (Hinou opens a secret compartment)
2 passports. (Hinou closes the compartment)
Master: With this, I’ve cleared my debts.
Hinou: Yea. Bye.
Master: Yea. (Hinou leaves the shop and someone else enters) Welcome, what will you have?
Shinozuka: May I have a hot coffee?
Master:  Yes.
Shinozuka: What a pretty ornament you have, did you make it?
Master: Yea, it’s called a decoy. It was used as bait during hunting.
Shinozuka: Hm… Does Master know about this explosion case?
Master: Of course I know it, seems like it’s finally getting closed. Please enjoy.
Shinozuka: Actually, I was involved in the investigations of that case.
Master: So you mean, that you’re from the police? It must be regretful.
Shinozuka: Yea, I’m so full of regrets that I still haven’t come to terms with things yet. If you don’t find it troublesome, can you listen to my grumbling?
Master: I don’t mind, if you’re fine with someone like me, please say whatever you like.
Shinozuka: Thank you so much (Shinozuka takes a sip) For that case, the investigations went through a tough time and we thought it would definitely end unresolved. But 1 year ago, we found a suspect during our investigations, let’s call him A. But, it’s impossible to find physical evidence now. Unless we get a confession from A, there was nothing we could do. At this point in time, a young policeman approached A.
Master: Huh? Did that young policeman succeed in getting the man to confess?
Shinozuka: No, it was useless. The mummy hunter became a mummy himself, it was the worst conclusion.
Master: You have my sympathy for that.
Shinozuka: From this point onwards, it’s just my own speculations. But a few days ago, the previous leader of a large yakuza group, Kasao, was shot dead. I think that was the policeman’s work.
Master: Why would the policeman do that?
Shinozuka: That policeman’s parents died as a result of the explosion case. He pulled the trigger out of feelings for revenge.
Master: If you’re saying this, does it mean that the Kasao guy was the culprit of the explosion case?
Shinozuka: Yes, I’m guessing that A was the perpetrator while Kasao was the mastermind. But, this is strange. Why did the policeman find out about the truth so suddenly? It won’t be wrong to assume that A was the one who told him, but why did A reveal the truth out of the blue? It was a case which would be closed soon, if he messed up, he might even get involved. There might have been a reason for A to wish for Kasao’s death without waiting for the case to be closed.
Master: Wait a minute, the one who killed Kasao was the policeman, right?
Shinozuka: Yes, but the one who made it happen was A, at least that’s what I think. For A, to have caused the policeman, who was targeting him, to commit a crime was probably something he planned. It was equivalent to ruining oneself. In the group of masterminds behind the explosion case, there was a certain politician’s secretary and a man who might have bribed the politician. For that case, there were plans to investigate the two men but dead men can’t talk. The truth was gone without anyone knowing about it.
Master: You’re speaking as though the politician wanted to dispose of the people who knew the truth. But no matter how you look at it, to have massacred that many people just for that reason, I can’t imagine it. In the first place, the mastermind was that Kasao guy right?
Shinozuka: Kasao was brothers with that politician. I think Kasao plotted the explosion case for his older brother. He might have owed him a favour or gotten money from him, I don’t know the details. There are people who would do things which don’t make any sense. But, a secret like this can bring two people together. And if things turn sour at any point in time, it can also become a frightening weapon. For example, after many years, Kasao’s relationship with that politician soured and he blackmailed the politician with the explosion case. What do you think will happen?
Master: The politician would want to dispose of Kasao.
Shinozuka: Yes you’re right. He would entrust this job to someone who was already aware of the truth, because it would be best if fewer people knew the truth.
Master: I see, then that politician might have commissioned A to dispose of his brother. A then made use of the policeman who was connected to the case to kill Kasao without dirtying his own hands. He is quite an intelligent man.
Shinozuka: We’re missing the relay point. The one connecting Akagi and Hinou, is you, Ou Eiken. Public security has always been keeping tabs on you as a dangerous person. Upon further investigations, we found out that you were meeting up frequently with Kasao during those days.
It was coincidental that we found out about Ou’s existence. This man was shown in one of the photographs of Hinou’s regular hangouts, taken by one of the staff who was keeping an eye on Hinou. After investigating the call records of his home, we were able to confirm that Kasao had been contacting him and the possibility became stronger. This café’s master is Ou Eiken, who had changed his appearance and name, and he has been blending in with normal people, leading a peaceful life.
You were asked to dispose of Kasao by Akagi. But you are no longer active as an assassin, that’s why you introduced Hinou who was your successor. Hinou used the policeman to kill Kasao, isn’t that so?
Master: What are you talking about? I’m not that Ou Eiken man, I’m registered as a Japanese. I even have a family register, I won’t mind if you investigate me.
Shinozuka: There’s just one thing which I don’t understand. Who was Akagi Shouichirou killed by?
Master: There’s no way I could know, but wouldn’t it be someone who was involved in that explosion case? This is of course, nothing more than my own speculation. I manage this tiny café and occasionally take in requests to craft decoys. It has always been like this since a long time ago. I accept customer requests and perform my duties; if they wanted a red decoy then I would have carved them a red bird. If they wanted a blue decoy, I would make a blue bird.
Shinozuka: Is that man, is Hinou just like a decoy to you too?
Master: To the creator, a masterpiece and a failed decoy will both be equally cute.
Shinozuka: To this man, Hinou would have been his masterpiece. Yasumi was drawn in by the decoy this man crafted and lost his way after forgetting his true self. The most important things always slip out of my fingers.

Act 5: Past to Future (過去から未来へ)

Nagi: Along with Kagaya, I went to Yashima’s place to report on the status. We didn’t reveal everything, but we revealed the culprit’s motives for killing Kasao and the fact that he has already escaped out of the country.
Nanae: Yashima sensei, I wonder what happened.
Yashima: The culprit killed Kasao because of a personal grudge, it had nothing to do with the Togetsu group. Announce that to the group leaders.
Nanae: But, with such a sketchy reason, they won’t be convinced.
Yashima: It will depend on your skills, even if they protest, you must never reveal Kasao’s bad deeds. This will not be just a problem for the Koujinkai. Even though the case has been closed, it’s a crime of that level, things will get out of hand and it will affect the daily lives of the members.
Nanae: Yes sir.
Yashima: Anyway, the dispute has been resolved. Now that you have fulfilled the duty of the Kanto Kyowakai, you can move freely within the organisation for now. It will be up to the Koujinkai to pursue the man who has fled.
Nanae: It will probably be useless to take those actions.
Nagi: So they probably will not pursue Yasumi tirelessly huh. Well, even if someone finds him, Hinou is by his side. As long as that man is there, no one will be able to lay hands on Yasumi.
Yashima: Nagi, you really did well for me this time.
Nagi: Would you have preferred it if I did a half-assed job?
Yashima: Don’t be ridiculous. By the way, about the case where Akagi Shouichirou was killed, did you get any information regarding that?
Nagi: No.
Nanae: Could it be the work of the man who killed Kasao?
Yashima: Kasao was shot, Akagi was strangled. The first was done in a secluded area while the second was done with lots of people around, the one who killed Akagi was bold enough for me to think him reckless. I can’t imagine them to be killed by the same person. Nagi, what do you think?
Nagi: Unfortunately, I don’t even have any idea regarding that.
Yashima: Is that so, well then it’s fine. From now on, I’ll be counting on you. Kagaya, support Nagi well.
Kagaya:  Yes sir.
Yashima: The both of you should take a break and rest until the new year begins.
Nagi: Thank you so much.
Nagi: Tomorrow is Christmas Eve huh? This year will be ending soon. What, did I say something weird?
Kagaya: No, you didn’t. You didn’t but…
Nagi: You are really, just finish your sentence. I’m curious.
Kagaya: Have you made any plans for Christmas Eve?
Nagi: Huh? What did you say?
Kagaya: That is, I asked you if you have made plans to spend Christmas Eve with anyone. Don’t make me repeat myself.
Nagi: Does that mean that you want to spend it with me?
Kagaya: Besides that, what else can I mean…
Nagi: (Nagi laughs) Amazing, I’ve been asked out on a date by Kagaya!
Kagaya: Don’t laugh at someone’s sincerity!
Nagi: I’m sorry, it’s not like I was belittling you. I just found the unlikely idea of spending Christmas Eve with you funny. By the way, not to mention Christmas Eve, I’ve been waiting for your invite every night.
Kagaya: Damn it! I’m going to stop the car and rape you right here.
Nagi: Kagaya, let’s go for a drive, should we go to the sea?
Kagaya: The sea? Which one?
Nagi: It doesn’t matter. I suddenly feel like gazing at the sea with you.
Nagi: It’s so cold! This wind is really something. But, Kurihama in winter is also a nice experience.
Kagaya: We probably can’t stay here for long. Here, coffee.
Nagi: Oh, thank you. I’ve imposed on you quite a bit for this case. Though it is a bit sudden, I think I want to tell you everything. You should know a little by now, but I feel like telling you all about the past I’ve hidden from you, here and now. On that night we slept together, I told you about my friend. That story about the Chinese child, he was actually…
Kagaya: Nagi, it’s fine. I’m already not focusing on finding out about your past.
Nagi: But…
Kagaya: The past is just the past, it has already ended. I don’t want your past, but your future. Nagi, give me your future, starting from now, starting from here.
Nagi: Don’t say something so pretentious, the one who is listening will get embarrassed.
Kagaya: It’s what I really feel, so it can’t be helped.
Nagi: I’ve made him wait for a long time, but I am finally able to accept his feelings honestly. From this point onwards, whenever I feel like I’m about to crumble under the weight of my guilt, he will be here. I want to continue towards the future by relying on Kagaya’s outstretched hands.
Along with those pretentious words, I would like a pretentious kiss too. (Kagaya kisses Nagi) You are the best partner ever.
Kagaya: Hurry up and change that term to lover.

  1. Before commenting on this, I want to thank you for the translation, of course :D It was awesome, as always.

I started listening to it at 12am (maybe) and I couldn’t stop listening/reading until I finished both CDs at 6am! (god bless holydays). It’s been so long since a story like this (yakuza, murderers and all that) caught my attention in such a powerful way. It’s a very good story and I loved the characters too. I liked CD the most, though, since CD2 can be a little slow sometimes. It has so many flashbacks that it was confusing from time to time. Apart from that, it was great.

I’m a bit dissapointed with the ending, though… I loved Hinou x Yasumi pair, but in the end I felt so sad for Yasumi. Being in that kind of situation in which you love and hate someone who just pities you and, for an unknown reason (because that wasn’t love in my opinion), wants to possess you so badly that he doesn’t care if your heart and mind are slowing breaking. I’d love to think Hinou’s last decision was made because of love (I don’t want to give spoilers), but his way of loving sure is selfish, mad and full of holes. It’s still pity for me and I hate it. Poor Yasumi… If there isn’t a kind of prequel for this, I’ll think Yasumi ends of killing himself. That should be his only way out from his own hell.

Thnk you for the translation again! And, by the way, what is “The Course for Tomorrow「明日の行方」” Yeah, it says it’s an extra, but where was is taken from? Is it the story written in the CD booklet? I’m looking forward to it if I can read something else about Hinou x Yasumi.

    • The course for tomorrow is something in the booklet scans and oh no I haven’t got down to translating it! I have a feeling that it’s a novel except and about a scene from before yasumi loses his memories.
