Act 1: Unforgettable Past, Forgotten Past (忘れえぬ過去、忘れ去れた過去)

Hinou: Did I make you wait?
Nagi: Not really, I’m just early because you were nagging at me to not be late. Is that what dad gave you? What’s inside?
Hinou: I didn’t ask, he isn’t someone who would tell us if we asked anyway.
Nagi: That’s true.
14 years ago, on the 21st of December. Hinou and I headed towards a restaurant on the top floor of Touei Departmental Store in Shinjuku. Ou had asked us to deliver a package and I knew that it was nothing decent.
When you collected the package, you met dad right? Was he doing well?
Hinou: Yea, he hasn’t changed.
Nagi: Say, isn’t it strange? For that man to delegate his entire task to us. It’s weird.
Hinou: This time it’s just the delivery of a package, he probably thought that it would be fine since it’s simple.
Nagi: It has been one month since Ou went underground and disappeared. It was 3 days ago when Hinou contacted me about carrying out Ou’s task for him. Before that, we have only been helping Ou indirectly by carrying out information gathering tasks like investigations and surveillance. To suddenly give an order for us to perform this task together… We had an ordinary lunch set each at the Chinese restaurant where Hinou made a reservation.
Hinou: Kenji, seems like dad is thinking of retiring soon, he wants either you or me to take on the name of “Ou”.
Nagi: Ou is a genius hitman, when it comes to gunmanship or melee combat, his skills at handling weapons are first class. His knowledge of explosives and poisons is excellent too, making him a prodigy at assassination. From that man, the two of us learned the A-Zs of killing people.
Hinou: I answered him that I don’t mind. What about you? If you don’t want to, I can take over his position alone and you can live a peaceful and ordinary life. But, from now on let’s continue living together. I have no intentions of being apart from you.
Nagi: I was grateful towards Ou for bringing the two of us up even though we weren’t related. But I couldn’t help holding distaste when I help out with Ou’s work. The cold-heartedness of killing has placed a huge burden on me.
Hinou: It’s fine even if you don’t give your answer right now, it’s something of the future. Besides that, what do you plan to do about Rieko?
Nagi: Why are we suddenly on the topic of Rieko?
Hinou: Because that girl, isn’t she totally in love with you?
Nagi: I just slept with her a few times, that’s all. She will come to her senses and give up on me soon.
Hinou: Rieko is a woman who can be put to good use, if it’s for you, she would do anything. Don’t just let go of her that easily, tame her and make her yours. When the time comes, she will definitely be of use.
Nagi: Rieko is the kid Hamano Yumiko, Ou’s mistress, brought along. We came together at 12 years old and lived together for about 3 years. After that Yumi become mentally unstable and she took refuge in her hometown Toshimaku, leaving Ou’s side. To me, Rieko was nothing more than a little sister but she didn’t felt the same way. She forced herself on me saying that it’s alright until I find a lover. As I wasn’t able to give her a cold shoulder, the relationship got dragged on like this.
Hinou: Women are so troublesome, they get so elated once you show them some kindness but when you are cold towards them, they start to hate you.
Nagi: Unlike me, you seem to be really good at treating women.
Hinou: Of course.
Nagi: Hinou has always been overflowing with pheromones, his seductive expressions and gestures, his supple and strong body, the way he doesn’t show any weaknesses, and his awe-inspiring presence make him unforgettable to anyone who has laid eyes on him. I was attracted by such a man too. Before we were picked up by Ou, no matter how trying times were, we always got through them hand in hand. Even if the whole world was against us, as long as I had Hinou by my side I wouldn’t be afraid of anything. That was how important he was to me and how inseparable we were.
Hinou: Kenji, it’s about time. Go check on the private room beside ours.
Nagi: I got it.
Nagi: 12:30:08 pm, we have already paid for our meal and left the building 10 minutes ago. There were 2 men in the private room next to ours, they were well-dressed elites. After I reported back to Hinou, he took out two boxes from the bag and hid them under the table by taping them to the underside. It seems like the people who reserved the room next would pass those boxes to the people in the next room. I thought it was a troublesome way of doing things.
Were the things inside those boxes really dangerous goods?
Hinou: Does it matter? Our job is already done.
Nagi: You’ve grown out your hair, aren’t you going to cut it?
Hinou: I’ll keep it this way for now. I know that it’s not good to stick out but… (Hinou looks up, lost in thought)
Nagi: What’s wrong?
Hinou:  Airplane.
Nagi: Oh, that… (Sound of explosion and screams) What?! What happened…
Hinou: I wonder, it might be a gas explosion. That area was where we were just at. That was simple.
Nagi: Hinou laughed quietly. He must have been scratched by a flying fragment, there was blood smeared on his cheek. That bright colour of the blood contrasted with his pale skin and looked like a medal on him.
Nagi: Damn it I can’t fall asleep! Because I met Hinou, it’s what happened back then…
After that, the world went into chaos. After hearing the report from the police, we deduced that the thing we left behind was a time bomb.
Nagi: You… that it was a bomb…
Hinou: I didn’t know either. But, as expected from dad, the way he does things is really different. (Nagi punches Hinou) Why are you getting angry now? We were brought up with the money dad earned by killing. So is it alright to kill people one by one, but wrong to kill a lot of them at once? Isn’t it the same?
Nagi: I couldn’t live by Ou’s way of life. Ou asked me if I was reaching my limits. That was a test, if I couldn’t hold my ground fearlessly and stay, I won’t be able to become his successor. It was that moment when I finally understood everything clearly.
Hinou: Are you intending to betray me?
Nagi: Please understand me, I will live by myself from today onwards.
I told Hinou that. But Hinou didn’t try to accept the reality.
Hinou: If you try to leave my side, I will never forgive you. You are a coward!
Nagi: I’m begging you, please understand this. (Hinou punches Nagi) What… are you trying to do…
Hinou: If you aren’t going to remain as my partner, then you might as well become my woman. It’s fitting for a coward like you!
Kagaya: (Nagi enters room) Hm?
Nagi: I will sleep here too. (Nagi lies down next to Kagaya) You better don’t be saying weird things like I’m trying to seduce you.
Kagaya: Let me say it. What are you thinking of, after what happened yesterday?
Nagi:  Nothing.
Kagaya: Are you here to test my self-restraints?
Nagi: Why must I be testing you? It’s not like you will rape me or anything, I trust you. You won’t betray me, right?
Kagaya: Yea, I won’t betray you. Trust me. But, you can overlook the occasional sexual harassment right? (Nagi laughs) Nagi, are you alright?
Nagi: Don’t worry, I am totally fine.
Yasumi: After I met up with Satou, no, Shinozuka-san of the Public Security sector, I didn’t feel like returning to the apartment immediately. I loitered around in town for a while before making my way back. Hinou didn’t press for the reason I was late in coming home and asked me to join him in shower with a gentle voice. (Yasumi sighs) How should I continue my life from now on? Hinou is the hated culprit who killed my father, but along with my memories, the hatred I held for him has also disappeared. For me now, it’s difficult to hate Hinou.
Hinou: Have you warmed up properly?
Yasumi: Hinou, can I ask you something?
Hinou: Yea, what is it?
Yasumi: Do you have no intentions of quitting your current job? It’s not like you’re gaining pleasure from killing people right? If it’s just for the money, I’m sure there are other jobs for you.
Hinou: It will be impossible. For me jobs aren’t just a means to earn money. Even though I don’t gain pleasure from killing, I take pride in it.
Yasumi: Pride?
Hinou: That’s right. The more difficult the job, the more it is worth doing. Don’t they say that often? If you ask a mountaineer why he climbs mountains, he will answer that it’s because there are mountains to be climbed. It’s the same as that. Requests come in for me to brush up on my skills, so I accept them. There is no need for a reason behind my actions. There’s a prey, that’s why I hunt. In other words, this work is my job and it’s also the only way for me to continue living.
Yasumi: But one day, you might get caught by the police.
Hinou: I won’t get caught. I never leave evidence behind and I always set up a few traps at the scene. Just in case the client gets overburdened by guilt and decides to turn himself in to the police, the police will never direct their investigations towards me. My brokers know that if they give out my information, they will die. So you can’t accept my way of living?
Yasumi: Frankly speaking, yes. But…
(Flashback)
Hinou: You fell in love with me despite knowing who I really am. You yearned for me, the way I was.
Yasumi: If I look at it that way, it seems like in his lonely life, Yasuhara Hiroshi finally met someone who really understood him.
Hinou: Or you can’t forgive me? Do you find my way of living repulsive?
Yasumi: I won’t mind about what kind of man Hinou is. I want to be together forever.
Hinou: (Hinou kisses Yasumi) I’m going to take a shower.
Yasumi: To pretend to be in love with the person I was supposed to arrest. I wonder what thoughts Yasuhara had while he got intimate with Hinou.
Hinou…
Hinou: What’s the matter?
Yasumi: Am I different from before?
Hinou: Hm?
Yasumi: That’s just… I got a bit curious about it, about how I embraced you before I lost my memories.
Hinou: Why are you trying to find out about that?
Yasumi: I thought you might prefer the me before… Are you satisfied with the me now?
Hinou: (Hinou laughs softly) Are you jealous of yourself? To me, you’re still the same person, before or after.
Yasumi: But, I’m sure I’m different. If you tell me about how I was like before, it might help me with regaining my memories.
Hinou: There’s no need to. I have no dissatisfactions with the current you. It’s true though, if I compare you with the you before, your aura and behaviour are rather different. But I believe that you’re being your original self now.
Yasumi: How do you know that?
Hinou: Previously, you were rather aggressive in bed but it seemed like you were forcing yourself to. Even though you were seducing me in that taunting manner, you always had the habit of telling me to “make it rough” when we were in bed. It seems like the balance between your heart and body was off and while watching that, I thought you were so pitiful.
Yasumi: Could it be that, Yasuhara couldn’t forgive himself. He was suffering from having to lie to himself.
Hinou: The current you is cowardly and cute. After losing your memories, maybe the mask you had on got taken off. I like you as you are now. You don’t have to force yourself to return to the previous you.
Yasumi:  Okay.
Rather than the Hinou whom he’s staked one year of his life on, Yasuhara killed Kasao first. I can get that he was extremely angry, but how did he find out about Kasao? I don’t understand. The only thing I understand, is that the person “Yasuhara” died on the day along with Kasao. That’s right, let’s just forget about Yasuhara Hiroshi. From now on I can just live as Yasumi Tooru, together with Hinou…

Act 2: Curse (呪縛)

Nagi: Kagaya, I’ll be moving alone for now. During this period, I’ll leave the Dove to you.
Kagaya: What do you intend to do?
Nagi: I intend to snoop around Hinou’s surroundings because I’m absolutely certain that Kasao’s murderer is someone close to him. So, I’ll do all that I can to find out on that. I have a job for you, can you dig up more on Kasao’s past?
Kagaya: Kasao-san’s?
Nagi: Yea, there’s a high chance that Kasao is deeply involved with the explosion case 14 years ago.
Kagaya: Wha… what do you mean?
Nagi: Hinou said that Kasao has gotten his retribution for what happened 14 years ago.
Kagaya: Isn’t that a lie to divert attention from himself?
Nagi: No, I think there’s some credibility to his words. Even though he denies being the person who murdered Kasao, he didn’t deny having connections to the case. Kasao’s murder and the explosion case are linked.
Kagaya: I think it’s impossible but, at that time, Kasao was still the Koujinkai’s chairman.
Nagi: Certainly, a man who is at the top of the strongest yakuza group in Japan wouldn’t do something so stupid. But, please, just do whatever you can do to find out more.
Kagaya: I get it, I’ll do it. But you have to promise me.
Nagi: Promise what?
Kagaya: It’s okay if you move alone, but don’t cease contact with me. You’re someone who always gets caught up with something violent once I take my eyes off you so I’m worried.
Nagi: I get it already, I’ll give you a call to report about that day’s happenings every day before I sleep.
Kagaya: You do that. If you can’t sleep, you can come by my house anytime. I’ll leave a space on my bed. What’s with that face?
Nagi: Nothing, I’m just thinking, isn’t it embarrassing to say that to a man?
Punk: (Nagi bumps into someone while walking) Oi, you! Apologise! Didn’t you just bump into me?
Nagi: I’m sorry about that then.
Punk: What? What’s with this guy? Is he joking? As if I can accept such an insincere apology! This?! Ouch it hurts!
Nagi: You shouldn’t be picking fights with yakuza, right? What would you do if I were a yakuza of this area? I would have taken you to my office and you would have beaten up.
Punk: I’m really sorry, you just didn’t appear to be someone like that. Please forgive me!
Nagi: Don’t they say, don’t judge a book by its cover? Aren’t you glad that you’ve learned a lesson today?
Punk: Y-yes! I’m sorry! (Punk runs away)
Nagi: Instead of learning lessons, it’s better to be rebellious like that. I don’t have any experiences of messing around with friends like that. But I was never lonely, because Hinou was there for me. Yes, until the last night…
(Flashback)
Hinou: Someone like you, without me, you won’t even have the right to live in this world.
Nagi: The night of our separation, I was raped by Hinou. If it was because his love went out of control, it might have been fine. But that was neither love nor possessiveness; it was just pure violence, scorn and contempt.
Hinou: No matter where you escape to, you will never forget me.
Nagi: Those words he uttered back then became a curse which rooted itself deep in my heart. Even now, I get overwhelmed by the sheer terror that he might be looking at me from somewhere.
Rieko: What did you come here for?
Nagi: Don’t glare at me with such a scary expression. I’ll just have a drink and go home. Seems like there are no customers today too, there’s a limit to how unpopular your bar can get.
Rieko: Our customers come in late.
Nagi: So you passed on my message to Hinou. I’ll give you my thanks.
Rieko: Did you meet him?
Nagi: Yea, we met up in front of Yumi-san’s grave.
Rieko: I see. So you heard about why mother died from Kazusa too?
Nagi: Yea, suicide?
Rieko: After she left dad and went back to her hometown, she kept being admitted into the hospital. She tried multiple times to kill herself before dying, so honestly, when she died, I felt relieved. Am I cold-hearted?
Nagi: No, it would be hard on anyone to watch over someone whose heart has been broken. I think that that person could only find peace in death. Ever since she got together with dad, living was like dying for her.
Rieko: Might have been so. But, it was true that she was in love with dad. That was why she tried to love you and Kazusa too. She was more concerned with the two of you, rather than her own daughter, me.
Nagi: That might have been the case. She meticulously taught Japanese to the two of us, who only know broken phrases of Japanese back then. She taught us the necessary knowledge for us to be enrolled into compulsory education. But we grew up and left her. After that, even Ou’s love for her came to an end.
Has your grandmother at your hometown passed on?
Rieko: She’s still alive. Even though she’s past 90 years of age, she’s still very healthy. Seems like she’s having fun looking after her great-grandchild.
Nagi: Did you get married?
Rieko: I’m not, I’m a single mother. Do you want to see a photo? (Rieko shows Nagi a photo)
Nagi: On the photo was a young boy who seems like he’s in primary school. He’s rather tall and from his facial features, he’s quite good-looking.
He will become a good man in future.
Rieko: Of course, he will definitely become a man who is a hundred times better than you are.
Nagi: Rieko? Is he mine?
Rieko: After Kenji left, I found out that I was pregnant. I wanted to abort it, it’s not like I had the confidence to bring up a kid all by myself. But, Kazusa stopped me. Once I told him about it, he told me “please give birth to it”. That Kazusa actually begged me with a serious expression I’ve never seen before, saying that he would bear all costs of giving birth and child support. If I still wasn’t satisfied, he would take the baby and bring it up himself. After being begged like that, how could I abort it.
Nagi: Why would Hinou go to such lengths to make you give birth to that kid?
Rieko: Isn’t it obvious? That’s because it’s your kid.
Nagi: Because… it’s my kid…
Rieko: That’s right. Kazusa is like a demon void of blood and tears, but he really treasured you. Even though it might have been distorted love but, to have someone whom he could give those feelings to, he might have been saved by that too. It’s that someone’s kid, of course he would want it to be born. The bond between the two of you was so strong that I could never enter into your world. But, I was content. If it’s Kazusa, then it can’t be helped, I’m fine with being number 2. Despite that, you abandoned Kazusa and ran away by yourself. You ran away and tried to find peace all by yourself.
Nagi: Say whatever you want. If you are going to better after, I can sit here for hours listening without saying a word.
Rieko: No way, if I’m just going to badmouth you, it will come back at me. I’m really happy now because of this kid. He’s a really gentle kid, gentle and strong.
Nagi: I see. I’m glad that he isn’t like me.
That’s right, the me who ran away has no right of being called his father.
Rieko: The man you were here with the other day is yakuza right? What are you doing now?
Nagi: I’m also yakuza, but I’m more like a handyman.
Rieko: Hm… In the end, you weren’t able to live a decent life as well. Can I ask? How did you live after that?
Nagi: I didn’t lead a life worthy of a tale. I had my hands full with living past day by day.
(Flashback)
Woman: Say, won’t you work at a snack bar of my friend’s?
Nagi: Upon a recommendation of a woman I met in the entertainment district, I started working at a certain snack bar. One month later, I got into a fight with some yakuza who came to the shop. After driving them away a few times, Ooshiro-san, the top of the yakuza group who’s in charge of that area got wind of me and dropped by.
Ooshiro: So you’re a minor? That’s too bad.
Nagi: He came to scout me and after that, he frequently showed his face at the shop. Over time, he started to talk with me over drinks. I thought he was a weird man, but I couldn’t bring myself to hate him. Even though he seemed scary, he’s a man who had a strong sense of moral obligation and took good care of his underlings.
Ooshiro: Kenji, you turn 20 today right? Join our group. Humans can’t survive if by in solitude.
Nagi: I don’t like to be tied down to a group.
Ooshiro: But, in order to live, humans have to constantly seek out others. The bitterness of living in solitude and the pain of being alone in a group, they are both the same. If that’s the case, then you should just choose to live in a group sooner than later.
Nagi: While I was still pondering over it, I entered the group. Because of that, I understood that it’s more painful to live in a group. After 5 years, I have come to be known as Ooshiro-san’s right hand man. It was around that time when the number of group members who got arrested increased dramatically. At the same time, Ooshiro got diagnosed with lung cancer and had around half a year more to live. Ooshiro-san ordered the disbanding of the group, a mortifying decision.
Ooshiro: Nagi, you should go to Yashima-sensei’s place. If it’s that person, he will be able give you work which fully utilises your potential. It will be a waste to let someone like you rust away as a yakuza.
Nagi: I took it as Ooshiro-san’s last order and went to Yashima old man’s place. And 2 years ago, I got placed under Munechika-san. That was where I met Kagaya.
Even though I haven’t been living a decent life, I am satisfied.
Rieko: I see, it’s too bad, I had always been hoping that you to be met with some terrible misfortune.
Nagi: It seems like I won’t be getting a second drink, I’ll get going. By the way, do you know what kind of person Hinou’s roommate is?
Rieko: Why… will you ask such a question?
Nagi: It’s someone Hinou fell in love with, sure makes me curious.
Rieko: I told him to stop it because living with another man would be dangerous, but he never listened to me at all. I’ve never met him before, I’m sure they will break up soon anyway. There are very few people out there who would truly fall in love with a dangerous man like Kazusa.
Nagi: On the day of the incident, the man Hinou was carrying might have been his roommate. That’s what I speculated. Hinou was at the crime scene, and the murderer was the one who wanted to support the murder. If it’s his lover, then it would be understandable.
Rieko: It might out of pity.
Nagi: Pity?
Rieko: That’s what Kazusa said, that guy is a pitiful guy, that’s why he’s taking care of him.
Nagi: I want to know Hinou’s address, but if I question Rieko any further, she will definitely find it suspicious.
Then, one last question before I leave, if you don’t mind, can you tell me your kid’s name?
Rieko: It’s Satoshi. The kanji is the same as the first word in “clever”.
Nagi: That name, who gave it to him?
Rieko: Kazusa. I don’t know why, but he was really insistent that we use that name. What’s wrong?
Nagi: No, nothing. Get along well with Satoshi. See you. (Nagi leaves shop) Why?!
(Flashback)
Hinou: Xiao Cong! (小聡)
Nagi: When we were young, that was what Hinou called me. “Xiao Cong”, written as small Satoshi.
Why did you… such a name… After you trampled all over my heart like that, why did you wish for my child’s birth?
(Flashback)
Hinou: After losing you, I was really sad.
Nagi: Tell me, who was I to you? What did my existence mean to you? Hinou…

Act 3: Inevitability and Coincidence (偶然と必然)

Sugimoto: My text, did you see the photo? It’s that long-haired guy right?
Nagi: Yea, you got it. So the guy who’s with him is his roommate?
Sugimoto: Yes that’s right. We haven’t seen anyone other than that man leaving or entering Hinou’s apartment.
Nagi: Alright, thank you, Sugumoto.
Sugimoto: Then, that’s all.
Nagi: Okay. (Nagi hangs up)
Surprisingly, Hinou’s number was actually registered under his own name. Thanks to that, we found out his home address. He didn’t take precautions against me, was it his decision or was he just complacent? He looks rather proper and no matter how you look at him, he doesn’t appear to be yakuza. If Hinou’s words were true, then this man would have been involved in the explosion case. (Phone rings)
Nagi: Kagaya?
Kagaya: Yea, I’ll be heading towards Sapporo now.
Nagi: Sapporo?
Kagaya: A man who used to be Kasao-san’s driver currently resides in Sapporo, Fukuyama Shoichi. He was the man whom Kasao trusted most in the household and he has cut ties with the yakuza now. After investigating that case in depth, I dug out quite a bit of interesting information. In order to support certain claims, I’m now on my way to meet that man. I’ll tell you more when I’m back. Till then. (Kagaya hangs up and Nagi dials another number)
Nagi: Oh, Sugimoto, it’s me. I have another job for you.
Sugimoto: Oh he’s out. That’s him.
Nagi: The man who emerged from Hinou’s apartment was certainly the same one in the photo.
Sugimoto, stand by for my orders at that traffic light. Naito, come with me. The plan will be as discussed.
Naito: Understood. (Nagi and Naito leaves the car)
Yasumi: What are you doing!
Naito: Be quiet.
Nagi: If you make a ruckus, I’ll shoot you.
Yasumi: You guys… who are you? What do you want with me?
Nagi: I have something to ask you. Sorry but you’ll have to come with us. Hm? Do you know me?
Yasumi: No… I don’t know… there’s no way I would know you…
Nagi: Well it’s fine. It doesn’t matter whether you know me or not.
Naito: Move it!
Nagi: You two, wait outside.
Both: Yes sir.
Nagi: Just sit on any of the boxes there. (Nagi takes out a cigarette while Yasumi remains terrified) What, you want one too?
Is he really someone who killed the ex-boss of a yakuza group? His entire body is trembling.
Aren’t you Hinou’s lover? Do you know what his work is about? Just a while ago, Koujinkai’s ex-boss Kasao got murdered. That’s Hinou’s work.
Yasumi: You’re wrong, it-it wasn’t him.
Nagi: So you were the one who did it. Why did you kill Kasao? Tell me the reason. (Yasumi remains silent and Nagi punches something) If I had the choice, I wouldn’t want to hurt you. It’s not a pleasant thing for me to hurt such a frightened man. I’d say this first, my job is to find out who the culprit is. If the culprit was yakuza, I won’t let him go. But no matter how I look at you, you’re an ordinary man. Depending on the situation, I won’t report this matter to the higher-ups immediately and you will have time to escape.
Yasumi: Why?
Nagi: I have no obligations towards Kasao, as long as this matter doesn’t escalate into a major conflict, I’m fine. All I want to know is the truth, I want to know the link between Kasao’s murder and the explosion which happened 14 years ago at Touei Departmental store. (Yasumi gasps) How are you related to that explosion case? If you’re going to keep quiet, then I will proceed to break your fingers and toes, one by one. (Yasumi tries to run away) Oi… If you’re that intent on not cooperating with me then you will seriously get hurt. (Yasumi tries to run but gets knocked down by Nagi, who then pins Yasumi down) If you don’t want your dominant arm to be broken, then spit it out.
Yasumi: I’ll…say… I’ll say it so please let me go.
Nagi: If you try to lie, I won’t go easy on you. Even if I find out afterwards, it will be the same.
Yasumi: I understand… I’ll tell you the truth… (Nagi lets Yasumi go)
Nagi: First, tell me your name.
Yasumi: To Hinou, I’m Yasumi Tooru. But, my real name is Yasuhara Hiroshi.
Nagi: Real name? What’s going on?
Yasumi: I’m in the police force. And it seems like I’m still one of them currently. I just found out about this recently too.
Nagi: Are you alright in the head?
Yasumi: Me too, I was shocked when I found out that I was in the police force. That… I killed… Kasao, I think that’s the truth. But I don’t remember it happening, because I lost my memory.
Nagi: Amnesia?
Yasumi: After shooting Kasao, I tripped and fell down the stairs, I lost my memories after that. My memories haven’t recovered, but regarding myself, I’ve been investigating and found out more about my past. My father was involved in that explosion case and passed away as a result.
Nagi: (Nagi gets startled) So that is it…
Yasumi: I became a policeman like my father and got involved in the investigations for the explosion case. After that, in order to keep surveillance on Hinou, who has been identified as a potential suspect from previous investigations, I hid my identity and established contact with him. In order to get more information, I pretended to be in love and moved in with him. Somehow, I’m not sure how things proceeded from then on, but it seemed like I found out that the mastermind behind that incident was Kasao. It was surely for revenge when I killed Kasao. You… you’re Hinou’s friend right? You two met up at Zoushigaya Cemetery before.
Nagi: Did you see us?
Yasumi: Yea, I’m sorry but I followed Hinou and eavesdropped on your conversation. And I found out that… Hinou and you were involved in the case.
Nagi: (Nagi took a deep breath) Heh… So how was Hinou and I involved in the case? (Yasumi hesitated in answering)
Seems like he knows.
Yasumi: The one at fault, is Kasao.
Nagi: You wanted to arrest Hinou, that’s why you were living with him right? So why are you still living with him now?
Yasumi: That is…
Nagi: You, did you really fall in love with Hinou?
Yasumi: So what if that’s really the case? Hinou said he didn’t mind me even after I killed Kasao and lost all my memories. No matter what happens he would protect me. The mastermind of that case was Kasao, that’s why I… I killed Kasao and not Hinou.
Nagi: He doesn’t want to acknowledge the sins his loved one committed…
Yasumi: The one I need right now is Hinou, that’s why I’ve decided to live with him from now on. Hinou also wishes for that.
Nagi: What an unbelievably stupid idiot. He’s saying that he wants to live together with the person who killed his father? That he’s needed by Hinou? That he really wants to stay by Hinou’s side? (Nagi gets up and opens the door)
Naito: What’s wrong?
Nagi: My business is over.
Nagi: What does Hinou see in this fellow? He doesn’t even have a shred of his pride as a policeman. Before he lost his memories, he must have been a spirited man. He pretended to be Hinou’s lover and avenged his father with his own hands. The reason behind Hinou’s gentleness towards this guy who has lost his memories, is it guilt? No it can’t be, Hinou isn’t that type of person.
Sugimoto: We’re almost there.
Nagi:  Yea.
Hinou and my sin has greatly distorted this man’s life. I know who Kasao’s murderer is now, my mission as the Dove has been complete. But, what should I do, what do I have to do from now on?
(Flashback)
Hinou: It wasn’t a coincidence, but inevitability.
Nagi: That’s right, Hinou and I were meant to meet this man. And after the passage of 14 years, Kasao’s murder was meant to happen as well. (Nagi sighs) It’s time that I start to pay for running away from all sorts of things.
Nagi: Get off.
Yasumi: Is it really fine?
Nagi: What is?
Yasumi: This guy must have been desperately looking for the culprit of Kasao’s murderer. Despite that, why is he letting me go so easily?
Nothing. (Yasumi opens the car door) What’s the relationship between you and Hinou? (Nagi maintains silence)
So he doesn’t want to answer. (Yasumi gets off car and Nagi winds down his window)
Nagi: After finding out that you are the culprit, Koujinkai will move to get their revenge sooner or later. Be prepared. (Nagi leaves)
Yasumi: I deduced that he was part of the yakuza from his aura, but I was surprised. That someone of a high status as a yakuza was the young man who met up with Hinou; he didn’t appeared to be a yakuza then. It’s bad, if I don’t get back soon, Hinou will start to worry. (Yasumi starts to run and gets knocked down by a car)
Man: Are you alright?! (Yasumi comes to) I’m so sorry! Because the lights were orange, I just drove straight on! I will call for the ambulance right away! I’ll also contact the police!
Yasumi: The police… anything but that…
I’m fine, I’m not injured. I’m already alright, I’m in a rush so…
Man: But, you never know, you should at least visit the hospital…
Yasumi: It’s fine, I’m really fine so I’ll get going.

Act 4: Bubble (うたかた)

Hinou: What’s wrong?
Yasumi: My head… hurts… I got knocked down by a car… (Yasumi collapses and Hinou catches him)
Hinou: You… are you injured?
Yasumi: I only hit my head. Because I didn’t want them to call the police, I ran away. (Hinou carries Yasumi to the bedroom)
It’s alright now, Hinou is by my side.
Hinou: (Hinou puts Yasumi on the bed) Oi, Yasumi, open your eyes. Can you see me? Do I appear blurry?
Yasumi: I can see you properly.
Hinou: I think it should be fine for now, but if your headache gets worse, let’s go to the hospital.
Yasumi: No, it should heal if I rest. Stay by my side.
Hinou: Yea, I will. Goodness, you’re the genius at making me worry. How on earth did you get hit by a car?
Yasumi: At a junction, I didn’t check before crossing.
Hinou: That driver, he got lucky. If you were seriously injured, I would have never forgiven him. It’s an irreparable sin.
Yasumi: Irreparable sin? What’s this, it rings a bell. Irreparable sin… irreparable… sin… where have I heard it before? When was it? At night… on the bed… Hinou was naked. I have a feeling that we were talking about something crucial.
(Flashback)
Hinou: A long time ago, I committed an irreparable felony.
Yasumi: That’s right, Hinou said that. And after that… (Yasumi winces)
Can I sleep?
Hinou: Yea, rest well. I’ll be here until you wake up.
Yasumi:  Okay.
Yasumi: Teru, are you skipping work again?
Teru: Oh Yasumi-san! Wassup, today is so cold that I wished I had a coat on!
Yasumi: Besides that, what are you doing on a weekday afternoon? Stop slacking and get some work done!
Teru: I don’t want to hear that from Yasumi-san!
Yasumi: So you don’t want to be lectured by a useless bum who spends his every day lazing around?
Teru: I didn’t say that but… aren’t you lucky? You don’t have to work and you still get 3 meals a day. I wonder how much money Hinou has. Yasumi-san, Hinou has never told you to “go out to work” before right?
Yasumi: Nope. He always prefers it if I stay at home all day. Maybe he doesn’t want me to go out and cheat on him. Don’t I seem like a cute bird kept caged up by Hinou?
Teru: (Teru laughs) The “cute” part was unnecessary!
Yasumi: Right? Master agrees too right?
Master: I don’t get what you two are talking about.
Yasumi: Well, the good part is when I’m still being worried about. I won’t be able to live if Hinou abandons me.
Teru: Ah… so passionate… Yasumi-san is seriously deep in love with Hinou! Oh, it’s already this time, I have to go back to the office soon. If you want to speak fondly about Hinou, leave it till the next time.
Yasumi: Alright, work hard young man.
Teru: I get it. (Teru leaves)
Yasumi: Master, the bag on the right, is it your new masterpiece?
Master: Yea, I thought I might display it here until the client comes to collect it.
Yasumi: Hm? Should I request something from Master too? Do you think you can make one for me now?
Master: It seems impossible for a period time, I have quite a few requests lined up. There are quite a few of my decoys’ fans out there.
Yasumi: That’s too bad. Is Master satisfied with your life right now? Isn’t the unchanging monotony of your repetitive life boring?
Master: You’re having such thoughts because you’re still young. Once you get older, you’ll understand that a monotonous life is happiness.
Yasumi: Is that so? Master lives alone right? Do you have a wife or kids?
Master: My wife died early and I have a daughter and a son but I’m living by myself now. Do you want to see my grandchild’s photo?
Yasumi: Wearing his uniform, what a cute kid. Come to think of it, I used to play baseball when I was young too. To think I used to proudly proclaim that “I want to become a professional baseball player”, something like that.
I had a feeling that that was when I was the happiest. A respected father in the police force and a mother who never stopped smiling. But, that incident changed everything. That morning, I was preparing to leave the house for morning practice.
Mother: Hiroshi, I’m going shopping with your dad to Touei Departmental Store, do you want anything?
Yasumi: New baseball gloves!
Mother: Didn’t your father say to buy your gloves with your own pocket money? The ones you have right now can still be used.
Yasumi: Cheapskate! Then I don’t need anything. Bye!
I left the house without even giving my mother a proper look. That was the last conversation I had with my healthy mother. I held a deep loathing for the culprit who killed my father and snatched away my mother’s happiness. I want to kill him with these hands…
Yasumi: I’m going, thanks for the meal. (Yasumi leaves money on the counter and makes to leave)
Master: Yasumi, if you don’t like a boring and repetitive life, how about starting something? Nothing good will come out of living your life with irritation.
(Yasumi laughs and leaves the café)
Yasumi: I have to finish it soon. Even though it has been half a year since we started living together, I haven’t been able to get any information from Hinou. Because of that, I’ve been getting mentally unstable at times. The Yasumi Tooru I’ve created, who behaves like a spoiled child and gets jealous easily. To become him, the boundary behind my true personality and him becomes blurred and ambiguous. The sense of impending doom I had didn’t just arise from the fact that the case was about to be closed.
Yasumi: I’m sorry for making you wait.
Shinozuka: No it’s nothing, I just reached here as well. Don’t mind it.
Yasumi: Excuse me.
It was 5 years ago when I first met Shinozuka-san. After I got recruited into public security, he seems to be unnaturally concerned with me. At first, I didn’t get why he would be interested in a youngster like me. Soon after, I found out that we had been burdened by similar regrets in our hearts.
(Flashback)
Colleague: Do you know about the case where the councillor’s wife got involved killed in a yakuza case?
Yasumi:  No.
Colleague: Since you’re his favourite, I’ll make an exception by telling you. That case was quickly closed when one of the yakuza members turned himself in. But a short while later, some news articles surfaced, saying that the real culprit was someone else. In order to prevent a conflict between yakuza, the police did something underhand by arresting the man who turned himself in, even though they knew that he wasn’t the true culprit. In truth, the conflict was already reaching reconciliation at that time. Because of that, that case is still somewhat of a taboo to talk about in the police force nowadays.
Yasumi: I felt sympathetic towards them. The despair the councillor must have felt from having his innocent wife and unborn child killed and the anger at the culprit who was still living freely. Without any further explanations, I understood why he was so concerned about me. That’s why, he pushed his limits and forcibly got me involved in the investigations of the explosion case.
Shinozuka: Was everything as per the norm with Hinou?
Yasumi: Yes, I’m sorry for not being able to report on any progress. I feel remorseful about that.
Shinozuka: You’ve grown thinner again, have you been eating properly?
Yasumi:  Yes.
Shinozuka: Yasuhara, don’t drive yourself into a corner like this. Only the chief and I know about your current case, even if you don’t produce results, nobody will blame you.
Yasumi: But you must have entrusted me with your last hope for this case, I have the same feelings as well. As long as we can’t find another suspect for this case, I’ll go to any lengths to get a confession from that man’s mouth.
It was a year ago when I heard about Hinou from the councillor. Hinou Kazusa was a man whom the councillor had his eye on since another case. After that, he got wind of news that Hinou might have been in a Chinese restaurant at the Touei Departmental Store before the explosion.
(Flashback)
Shinozuka: Hinou’s foster father is a man called Ou Eiken, whose nationality is unknown. Public Security has been keeping tabs on this man for many years, before Ou has suddenly disappeared 10 years ago. Then, we started watching his foster child, Hinou, but he also disappeared suddenly. 2 years ago, a Public Security officer who was investigating on an underground loan organisation coincidentally found Hinou and once again, he became a subject of our investigations. But, he is a man who can’t be traced.
Yasumi: Can’t be traced?
Shinozuka: Yes. Whenever we tried to shadow him, we would definitely lose him, no matter how experienced the follower was. It’s certain that Hinou is involved in something shady, he’s an extremely dangerous man.
Yasumi: I volunteered to be part of the S project. After that, I started going to the bar Hinou regularly visits. That was the start of everything.
Shinozuka: Since you’re a serious man, I’m worried. I have high opinions of you as a policeman. That’s why I permitted your contact with Hinou. But, right now, I’m regretting my decision a little.
Yasumi: What do you mean?
Shinozuka: No matter how hard you try to suppress your personal feelings, there’s a limit to how close you can get to a man who killed your father.
Yasumi: Please excuse my rudeness, but I haven’t showed any personal feelings in front of Hinou. I am confident that I have been being the perfect “Yasumi Tooru” to him.
Shinozuka: That’s why I’m worried. The more perfect you get as Yasumi Tooru, the more your feelings as Yasuhara Hiroshi get suppressed and those feelings will get trapped within. If you continue with this sort of state, you will hit your limit soon. People aren’t as strong as they think they are. Yasuhara, do you think you can continue with this?
Yasumi: Yes, sir.
Shinozuka: Alright, I get it. All culprits get complacent when the case is about to be closed. They will want to confide their sins in someone, thinking that it is some sort of sign. You mustn’t let go of such a chance.
Yasumi: Yes, I will be careful and keep a tight watch on Hinou’s movements.
Yasumi: Say, if you have the time to, can you go shopping with me soon? That’s right, it would be nice if you can accompany me to a departmental store. How about one in Shinjuku?
Hinou: Do you have something that you want? If that’s the case then I’ll give you the money, just buy whatever you want to.
Yasumi: I’m saying that I want to go out with you. Hinou hasn’t been going out with me lately.
Hinou: I thought I’ve explained to you before, that I hate crowds.
Yasumi: I’m sorry, don’t get angry. I won’t say it anymore. I watched a movie on TV today, it’s about romance and the lover died of illness at the end. After watching it, I felt kind of down. While I’m still with Hinou, I thought I should create lots of memories.
Hinou: By speaking about it, it seems like you’re preparing for us to split up soon.
Yasumi: That’s not it, you’ll never know what might happen tomorrow right? Even if we are healthy people, there are people who would die suddenly from a traffic accident. Will Hinou be sad if I’m not around?
Hinou: Of course. I don’t even want to imagine life without you. I’m begging you, please don’t say such things to make me feel insecure.
Yasumi: If that’s what you really think, then stay with me, always. I want you to promise that you won’t part with me till death. (Hinou keeps quiet) Hinou? Why aren’t you saying anything? Don’t tell me, you’re treating our relationship as something of the present?
Hinou: You’re wrong, that’s not it.
Yasumi: Then, why are you keeping quiet? If you can’t be bothered about me, then just say so. If you aren’t serious about this, then it would only hurt for me to be the only one in love. In that case, then we should just break up, I’ll leave first thing tomorrow.
Hinou: Calm down, Yasumi. I’m saying that that’s not it. I’ve been deceiving you. There are things that I have been keeping from you. About my work and family, there are too much that I have been keeping from you. How can I promise you anything?
Yasumi: But… you love me, right?
Hinou: Yea, I do. That’s why I’ve been keeping so much from you. I’m so afraid of being hated by you.
Yasumi: I won’t hate you. It doesn’t matter what kind of person Hinou is. I sort of got the feeling that Hinou’s work isn’t something normal; even so, I’m fine with that! As long as you love me, it doesn’t matter. If you think I’m lying, then tell me everything! I will be able to accept everything about you, it’s true! Please believe me.
Hinou: A long time ago, I committed an irreparable sin. Without being aware of it, I was utilised as an accomplice in a terrible crime. Because of that, many lives were lost. Since then, my way of living has been changed completely. Or should I say, distorted?
Yasumi: What sort of sin did you commit?
Hinou: I can’t go into details, because it’s not a matter that concerns only me.
Yasumi: You were utilised as an accomplice? What do you mean, was there someone else with you?
Hinou: Rather than accomplice, I think mastermind would be more accurate. That man was the one who thought of the plan and plotted it. I was just a pawn in his plan.
Yasumi: The mastermind who planned that incident.
What kind of man was he?
Hinou: He’s a yakuza. Back then, he was the head of the strongest yakuza group in Japan. But, that case was unrelated to the yakuza. That man planned the entire incident based on a selfish and unbelievably stupid reason.
Yasumi: After that, I dug out the hidden truth behind the explosion case.

Act 5: Love and Hate (愛と憎しみ)

Yasumi: (Yasumi wakes up) I felt like I was having a long dream, a blissful but frightening dream.
Why did you let me kill Kasao?
Hinou: I didn’t tell you to kill Kasao, not once.
Yasumi: Even if you didn’t tell me to, you induced it to be so.
Hinou: That is nothing more than an opinion based on hindsight. Nobody ciykd gave really grasped which way a person’s heart will sway towards.
Yasumi: You, after you told me about the truth behind the incident, you made a show of lamenting that Kasao would be able to live freely without receiving any form of judgement for his sins. Then, after I arranged to meet up with Kasao, you purposely left a pistol where I could see it, that air-weight loaded with real bullets. I’m not trying to blame it on you, but just tell me one thing. Why did you let me kill Kasao?
Hinou: I instinctively knew that you were with the police at first sight. And I vaguely got the feeling that you wanted to find out about the truth behind the explosion case.
Yasumi: Wha?!
Right from the start, my cover has been blown.
Hinou: While the rest was for the sake of investigations, I couldn’t understand your rationale for trying to be held by me. I wanted to know why you were willing to go to such lengths, so I researched on your past. It wasn’t easy, but I found out your real name and actual address. I knew it the moment I saw your name, you are the son of the man who died in the explosion, Yasuhara Takeo’s son.
Yasumi: It was a total defeat. Right from the start, there wasn’t even a fight.
After finding out all that, why did you hold me? Why did you let me into this house?
Hinou: Because I grew fond of you. While hating me with your heart, you were desperately putting on a perfect lover’s act in front of me. You were unbearably cute. That’s why I told you about Kasao, I thought I would fulfil your heart’s desire by let you avenge your father’s death.
Yasumi: That’s a lie! As if you would have such a compassionate side. Weren’t you just pushing your sin onto Kasao?!
Hinou: I was just ordered to leave the goods and go, I didn’t know that there were bombs inside.
Yasumi: That’s a lie! That’s just an excuse!
Hinou: Yasumi, it’s fine even if you don’t forgive me. But just believe me when I tell you this, I love you. Even now, that feeling remains unchanged.
Yasumi: Stop it, I’m no longer Yasumi, I’m Yasuhara Hiroshi!
Hinou: Yasumi, look at me. Won’t you love me anymore? That can’t be.
Yasumi: I’m with the police! I’m your natural enemy, despite that, how could you say this?
Hinou: It doesn’t matter what you are, I need you. That’s why, don’t refuse me.
Yasumi: Lie, it’s a lie. As if I can believe what this man says!
Hinou: You said it yourself too, that you won’t mind it no matter what I am. Those should have been the words from your heart.
Yasumi: You’re wrong, those weren’t my words. When I lost my memories, I wasn’t my true self!
Hinou: Is that so? I thought that was actually your true self. You yearned for me and needed only me. You accepted that part of yourself then, I’m sure you were even relieved. Why? Because since you started watching me while you were still part of the police, you’ve been attracted to me. I noticed your feelings, that’s why, you were so pitiful and adorable. While you hated me, you loved me. You must have been so afraid of those feelings.
Yasumi: Stop it, I… I am not in love with you. That was all an act.
Hinou: That’s what you’ve been trying to convince yourself all along, if you didn’t do that, you wouldn’t have been able to remain as yourself.
Yasumi: Move it! I don’t want to hear about your idiotic fantasies! (Yasumi leaves room and starts packing up)
Hinou: Where are you going?
Yasumi: I have no more business with you, my job is over.
Hinou: Then where will you return to? Will a murderer like you return to the police with a nonchalant face? (Yasumi stops) For a murderer like you, you no longer have a place to return to. I’m sure you know that very well. Just live like this with me.
Yasumi: I don’t want to… I… I… with someone like you…
Hinou: I have no intentions of letting you go. You should just admit it, that even before you lost your memories, you were in love with me. It was just that you couldn’t admit it, but you held true feelings for me. I was fully aware of that.
Yasumi: Is that so? Was I really in love with Hinou?
Hinou: You belong in my arms, I won’t let you go anywhere else.
Yasumi: Shut up, move it!
Hinou: You’re such a bad child, you were so well-behaved till just now… I certainly did kill Yasuhara Hiroshi’s dad, but I won’t apologise. I told you, that I don’t understand the importance of life, that’s why I don’t feel the guilt. To you, hatred is something important right? It should have been your reason for being alive. In that case, you shouldn’t let go of it. Just hate me more, you have the right to. Something like love will disappear soon enough, just like bubbles. But hatred is something like the blood that flows through your body. Until you take your last breath, it will continue to exist within you. I want to experience it personally when I hold you, the hatred you house in your body.
Yasumi: Stop it… Stop it, I will no longer sleep with you.
Hinou: Why? Even though you’re in love with me…
Yasumi: You’re wrong! I don’t love you!
Hinou: You love me while you hate me, isn’t it fine that way? You don’t have to choose an extreme.
Yasumi: I thought he was a man with cruel words. He doesn’t know how painful and scary it is to hold both feelings of love and hate at the same time.
Hinou: I’m a fortunate man, to be hated and loved by you at the same time. I’m receiving the most beautiful and the ugliest emotions in this world from you.
Yasumi: Unable to escape, I remained like a spectator to a show. Where did I go wrong? Someone, please tell me.
