This happens 2 years after S Series ends.
When Yasumi Toori woke up, he found himself at the bottom of a flight of stairs in the rain with a pistol in his blood-stained hand. He then looks up to see a stranger who tells him that “that man is dead”. With no memories of his past or even what happened on rainy day, Yasumi starts to uncover the truth behind the murder of an ex-yakuza head and his mysterious roommate, Hinou Kazusa.
This is probably definitely the best Drama CD I’ve ever known in terms of plot. While we don’t really get the full picture in the first CD, it builds up the suspense and story till the last track where we get and explanation about what has been going on.
I love the first track; the music and the sfx creates just the right type of atmosphere for that scene. There’s something about using choral music during/after violent scenes – it feels like the peace after the storm, or in this case it feels like something bad has happened but reality hasn’t sunk in for Yasumi yet. I’m not much of a Kondo Takashi fan but I think he was super super super good in this drama, more on this later.
Besides that, the sequence of events was arranged just right to grab your attention and make you think. Yasumi first wakes up like a baby with no memories (cue choral music~), he then hears about his life, or what it is supposed to be, from Hinou, whom he’s slightly intimidated by. Koyasu definitely has the natural advantage when it comes to playing a cool seme role (that voice! *swoons*) but it probably wasn’t easy to play Hinou. His voice was rather gentle towards Yasumi, yet it made me feel a bit afraid at the same time, as though he was hiding something scary beneath that cool exterior. I had this feeling that he was the sort of guy who was only gentle towards Yasumi, so it felt funny hearing him being friendly towards Teru.
At Teru’s slip of tongue, Yasumi finds out that he was once Hinou’s lover. At this point, there has been nothing unexpected, we would have seen the couple part coming. That night, Yasumi confronts Hinou about the fact that they were lovers from him and Hinou raped/seduced him, after telling him the truth about his work. Kondo Takashi’s scared voice was very convincing, I wonder how many takes it took for him to achieve that. On the other hand, Koyasu had his job cut out for him, he just has to open his mouth and tune his vocal chords to “low voice mode” and his default is good enough to make anyone most girls swoon. Note to self: Decoy is not the average drama I can listen while commuting, I had a hard time keeping the creepy smile off my face the entire time when I was listening to Koyasu.
The real plot twist comes when a stranger named “Satou” approached Yasumi in a very suspicious manner. Our suspicions soon turn to Yasumi instead, as it seemed like meeting up with Satou was a regular thing for him to do. However, nothing could be confirmed as Satou wouldn’t reveal anything to Yasumi “for his own sake”. This piqued my interest even more; what did he mean by “Yasumi Tooru is a fake name”? And keep in mind that up till now, we’ve received no explanations about why Yasumi killed Kasao. If we took Hinou’s word for it, Yasumi probably held some form of grudge against Kasao but that doesn’t explain why he would be hiding his real name from Hinou, his lover.
More answers surfaces when Yasumi uncovers his driver’s license and some other documents showing that his real name is “Yasuhara Hiroshi”. After some independent investigations, he soon found out that he was once in the police force and his father died in a major explosion 14 years ago, a cold case which would be closed from investigations soon.
I haven’t been paying much attention to them but there are two other characters, Nagi and Kagaya who are interested in Kasao’s case. At some point in the drama, we hear that Nagi was acquainted with Hinou in the past and they arranged a meet up at Nagi’s request. During their meet up, which Yasumi was present too, a lot of information was given and much confusion was cleared up. It seems that Yasumi probably found out the truth behind the explosion which happened 14 years ago and decided to execute his revenge on Kasao. It remains unclear, however, regarding the role Hinou played in this murder. He didn’t know that Kasao was the one Yasumi killed until the news reported it, but he seemed aware that Yasumi had a reason to kill Kasao.
Wait, I almost forgot about the most crucial piece of information. During Hinou and Nagi’s conversation, it was revealed that they were the ones who placed the bomb at the restaurant 14 years ago. Yasumi heard what was said and decided to meet up with Satou again in an attempt to clarify things. Almost everything was cleared up in the last track when Satou explained to Yasumi that he went undercover in order to get closer to Hinou, whom the police suspected. It wouldn’t surprise anyone who had listened to the S Series before, but Satou was actually Shinozuka Hideyuki, Yasumi’s superior. Yasumi was then given a choice between pursuing this case and giving it up to live a normal life; that roughly translates to continuing to live with Hinou as his lover, or leaving Hinou/his past/this case/everything and retiring for a normal peaceful life. I haven’t mentioned this before but Yasumi has already fallen deeply in love with Hinou, so he requested for more time to make his decision but I think I know that he wouldn’t leave Hinou’s side.
I know that this love between the two isn’t meant to be something beautiful; rather, it’s supposed to be a distorted and dark thing that’s binding Yasumi to Hinou. But at the same time I can’t help thinking that this isn’t love. He’s just relieved to have someone who would accept him for who he is and stay by his side regardless of what happens. I don’t know, if someone like Hinou was that fixated on me, I think I would have behaved like Yasumi too – with or without amnesia. Tall, good-looking, undefeatable when it comes to fighting, extremely devoted to his lover, and has a job (though of dodgy nature) to support 2 people plus an apartment at Ikebukurou and Koyasu’s voice? Keep dreaming, Shion.
The Nagi/Kagaya pair hasn’t been mentioned much in this review, and it’s not just because I prefer the first pair. The second and final drama in this series will mostly feature Nagi and Kagaya, so I figured that I can comment more on them then. Yes, I’m feeling slightly unhappy about less Koyasu and Yasumi but my love for this entire drama is so much that I will continue translating/reviewing it even though I’m sure translation the second drama would be such a pain. There will be more technical terms so please forgive me for not translating properly/word-for-word.
