Yuuto Lennix, an ex DEA agent was framed as his ex-partner’s murderer. To gain his freedom, Yuuto makes a deal with the FBI and enters Schelger prison to uncover the true identity behind the mysterious terrorist “Corvus”.
Deadlock opens with Yuuto (Nakamura Yuuichi) entering Shelger prison, the biggest prison in America with maximum security level. Within the first 20 minutes, we get a brief introduction to how prison life would be like for Yuuto. He makes a few new friends, Matthew, Mickey (Itou Kentarou), Nathan (Miki Shinichirou) and Dick (Yasumoto Hiroki). Dick, Yuuto’s cell mate, seems to dislike Yuuto right from the start, so we don’t get to hear much of Yasumoto yet. Yuuto also gets on the wrong side of one of the gang leaders within the prison, and gets attacked by his underlings.
Even though there isn’t much violence throughout this drama CD, I do appreciate how the author doesn’t hold back the violence when it is necessary for plot progression. Yuuto gets injured and we see a gentler side of Dick when he tends to Yuuto’s injuries. This didn’t really come as a surprise to me as I (and all of us out here who know the casting) expect Dick and Yuuto to get together. The pleasure is probably in watching how their relationship develops. We find out that Dick is gay (ho ho ho) and he pushed Yuuto down in an attempt to showcase how vulnerable Yuuto is. Even though Dick passed it off as a joke, he was apparently half-serious about it. I won’t deny that I was a little hopeful that something would happen, but nah, nothing happened.
Through a flashback, we find out why Yuuto thought that entering this prison was his “only way out”; He was tasked by the FBI to uncover the true identity behind “Corvus” – mastermind of a terrorist group – who is currently hiding in this prison.
After the run in with Tonya, Dick becomes slightly more willing to engage in conversation with Yuuto and we learn more about Dick and Yuuto’s families, or lack thereof. While Yuuto grew up in a normal and loving family, Dick grew up in the orphanage and joined the army right after he left. We also learn that his lover/partner, along with his entire team got wiped out in a terrorist attack.
At this point in the drama, I started to appreciate the good balance between comedic, quiet and tense scenes. My heart can only take so much stress at a go.
We get to hear more conversation between Dick and Yuuto, there seem to be less animosity between them as they chat freely to each other. Yay! Go for it, both of you! Shortly after, Yuuto sees Dick hanging out with Nathan and wonders if Dick has a thing for Nathan because Dick always seems to be very conscious of Nathan. Oh dear, someone is being too obvious! As someone who has relistened to this drama so many times, I can’t help but wonder if Nathan knew Dick’s motives and played along just because he wanted to have friends.
After a murder in the prison, Yuuto nearly gives himself away to Nathan and Dick’s attitude towards Yuuto took a sudden change, leaving Yuuto sad and confused. I guess anyone would be in a shit mood after covering up for someone’s mistakes twice, risking everything he’s been living for till now. Yuuto seems to be very conscious of Dick’s attitude towards him, I guess anyone would want to get along with their roommate… but Yuuto seems to look up to Dick a lot, most of his thoughts are filled with Dick.
I think I’ve said this before but I really like how the author doesn’t hold back on the violence. From the start when Yuuto got attacked by BB’s underlings till Rinji’s murder and now, cute young Matthew gets raped and tortured by a paedophilic sadist. You don’t get this kind of non-fan-service in your average drama.
This angered Mickey greatly and he decided to get revenge on Matthew’s behalf. Yuuto participated in Mickey’s revenge plan and landed in the solidary cell for a week. Even though I love the plot twists in Deadlock, I found it rather expected and cheesy when Yuuto meets Rivera (Mexican gang leader) coincidentally and becomes good friends with him; the main character just has to befriend all the high profile people. Either that, or catch their attention in some other way.
After Yuuto gets released from confinement, his relationship with Dick started to develop more favourably. I started smiling to myself when Dick got jealous of Rivera right after Yuuto got out of solidary cell. Ahhhh, Yasumoto’s gentle deep voice~ They shared a kiss (or two) and Yuuto decided to tell Dick what he’s trying to uncover at the prison. Yuuto, you’re definitely too trusting and impulsive.
But I guess he didn’t trust in the wrong person… or did he? Dick has been protecting Yuuto since the start, unfortunately Yuuto hasn’t realize it yet. When Yuuto tells Dick that he was going to find Nathan, Dick warns Yuuto to not trust anyone at the prison. This sudden warning puzzles Yuuto, but this is as far as Dick can go without revealing too much about his own motives at Schelger.
Yuuto then finds Nathan and they had an interesting conversation about prison business. This is probably crucial to the plot but too many big words for me to pick up on what they talked about. Their conversation turns to Dick and Nathan drops a bomb by telling Yuuto that Dick was convicted of police murder. This shakes Yuuto’s trust in Dick and he started wondering if he had misplaced his trust. Sneaky one, Nathan.
Well, things can’t go well for too long. Yuuto got outnumbered by BB and his gang in the shower room and… yea, the gang rape scene. Poor Yuuto, it was his first time too. I seriously couldn’t believe this would happen in a BL drama because, how can this happen! Again, this goes to show that authors doesn’t care about fan service and I think it’s a good sign that we’re in for a drama with a strong plot.
Yuuto wakes up in the infirmary room with a rather pissed off Dick, who started raving about how he wouldn’t hesitate to kill BB as long as Yuuto wishes for it. This shocks/frightens Yuuto who has never seen this side of Dick before. I must say Yasumoto acted out the gentle and dark sides of Dick really well; I was a little scared by angry Dick as well and Yasumoto is half the reason why I relisten to series as often as I do
Another reason why I like this drama so much – the background music. The lyrical piano piece when Yuuto and Dick talked about their family, the creepy strings piece when Yuuto describes the horrible solitary confinement cell and BB’s soundtrack which totally nails it.
After the semi-H scene, Yuuto took his first loving gaze at Dick’s back, only to see a scar running across it. Now, there are 3 things we know about Corvus. 1, he was in the army before. 2, he is somewhat a heartless murderer and 3, he has a scar across his back. Dick fits perfectly into the description of Corvus. Oh dear.
Yuuto sneaked into the infirmary to check on Dick’s medical records but found no records of a scar on his back. This raises further suspicion on Dick but before Yuuto could confront Dick, a riot breaks out in the prison and the two of them escapes from the riot scene. For no particular reason, I especially loved how Dick said “you’ll only get in the way if you stay” to Yuuto here.
We then get to the climax of this drama, the faceoff between Nathan and Dick. I sort of knew that Nathan was Corvus the moment MikiShin switched from his gentle voice to his “bad person” voice. It’s amazing how these seiyuus can switch between different personalities so easily. Nakamura’s performance at this scene was brilliant as well, portraying how Yuuto was struggling to cope with Nathan’s betrayal and personality switch. Anyway, a couple of BB’s underlings found the three of them and Nathan turned his gun away, giving Dick and Yuuto a chance to escape. I can’t help but wonder why Nathan didn’t shoot Dick and Yuuto while he had the chance. I mean, BB’s underlings were after Dick and Yuuto, why must he shoot them? He could have shot them after he kills Dick and Yuuto anyway, could he be giving them a chance?
While the riot rages on, Our seme and uke hid in a room and everything gets explained; why Nathan doesn’t have the scar across his back, what Dick is trying to achieve in the prison and why he viewed Yuuto as a nuisance initially. They then had their first proper H scene before Dick asks Yuuto to run away with him after the riot subsides. This is like a proposal in BL terms. Unfortunately, even though Yuuto was extremely tempted to, he decided to stay and use all the information he has gathered on Corvus/Nathan to negotiate with the FBI for a proper release. I like it when the uke has a mind of his own and doesn’t just blindly follow his love. They had an emotional parting after the riot subsided and it was good bye to Dick. I can’t believe how they fell in love so gradually and naturally, and now they’re parting – right after they realized their feelings for each other.
During the epilogue, Yuuto gets released from the prison and enters the FBI in order to pursue Corvus and Dick. We also get a glimpse into Yuuto’s dream, where Dick walks along a beach with a peaceful look on his face. Aw, Yuuto… Although it was super long, Deadlock had me holding my breath from the start till the end so YOU DEFINITELY HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS.
Now, on to Deadheat!
